Ford drops 2011 Explorer starting price

The starting price of the 2011 Ford Explorer will be $1,000 less than the existing model, or $28,995, Ford spokesman Jay Ward said in an e-mail today to the Free Press.

By lowering the starting price of its entry level model, Ford is following a pricing model that has allowed it to gain market share. For the first six months of the year, Ford’s market share has increased 1.5 points to 17%, according to Autodata.

Ford recently dropped the entry level price of its 2011 Ford Edge but raised the price of its upper level models which have more features and high-tech content.

Ford plans to provide more pricing details later today as part of social media and marketing blitz featuring its top executives in cities across the U.S. and Canada.
