Porsche builds electric Boxster prototypes

By Nick Aziz

In a statement to the press, Porsche on Monday confirmed what we have long suspected: engineers at its research center in Stuttgart have been hard at work building several pure-electric prototypes.

The company says it has built three electric Boxsters to provide “an initial first important insight into new electric drive components and battery systems for all-electric vehicle drive.” Porsche says it will begin field testing in early 2011.

In late 2008, Porsche famously placed an order for a Tesla Roadster, which was delivered some time last year. The automaker has likely been studying the vehicle in an attempt to match or exceed its capabilities.

“We will definitely be offering an electric sports car in the future,” said Porsche CEO Michael Macht. “But such a concept only makes sense if it offers product qualities typical of a Porsche.”

Porsche recently announced its 918 Spyder hybrid sports car, which combines a V8 gasoline engine and three electric motors to provide 718 horsepower and 78.4 mpg. Of course, the $630,000 car is neither affordable nor pure electric. While the 918 is aimed at über-rich supercar shoppers, we suspect the Boxster-derived EV will come much closer to the $100,000 Tesla Roadster, both in terms of price and powertrain.

One thing is for sure: our spy photographers in Germany will be on the lookout for silent, emissions-free Boxsters prototypes in the months to come.
