When it comes to safety, it appears the general consensus among the major automakers is the more high tech gear packed into a car, the better. In the recent past we’ve seen all manner of new radar and camera based safety technology, including blind-spot monitoring, active braking and lane departure warning systems.

Whether these systems truly add to a vehicle’s safety or just takes away alertness and driving skills from the person behind the wheel remains to be seen, but you can bet we’ll see a whole lot more of these advanced safety systems coming to more and more cars in coming years.

One of the leaders in this field happens to be Nissan, which has just announced its new "Moving Object Detection" (MOD) driving assistance technology. This latest system is designed to detect moving objects around the vehicle and alert the driver to their presence. MOD has been developed as an additional function for the Around View Monitor, Nissan's driving and parking assistance system released several years back.

MOD uses both a screen display and an audio buzzer to notify the driver of moving objects in the vicinity of the vehicle--such as pedestrians--during parking procedures, when starting the car, or when driving at low speeds.

Nissan is promoting the development of such safety technologies as part of its "Safety Shield" concept, based on the idea that vehicles help to protect people. However, the automaker still states the disclaimer that that the driver is always the main subject of control.

Expect to see the MOD system soon feature on any new vehicles previously equipped with the more basic Around View Monitor.
