Phelan's corner: Chevrolet Caprice police car

Production of the new rear-drive Chevrolet Caprice police car begins in the fourth quarter of this year, according to the Australian Webzine GoAuto. The car should reach U.S. police forces early in 2011.

General Motors' Australian unit, Holden, will build the Caprice squad cars. The Caprice shares many parts with the Commodore sedan that's Holden's top model. Holden also built the Pontiac G8, a sport sedan that used a short-wheelbase version of the Caprice's platform.

The patrol vehicle will initially be available with a V8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. GoAuto says a fuel-saving V6 will follow.

Chevrolet insists it will not sell a civilian version of the high-performance rear-wheel drive car, but the enthusiasts can take hope from the existence of an unmarked Caprice police car called the "detective package."
