UAW complains idled GM plant turned down jobs

Associated Press

Spring Hill, Tenn. -- United Auto Workers leaders in Tennessee say the manager of General Motors' Spring Hill plant that laid off thousands of workers last year has turned down 50 new GM jobs.

In a community with idled workers who hope GM is not finished at the plant, a statement by union leaders says "every single job is important."

A report in a UAW publication says the manager turned down an opportunity to build door panels.

Plant manager Terri Burden said in a statement Thursday that she will not be part of a public discussion but her decisions are based on the long-term interest of the site, employees and GM.

Her statement does not specifically address an offer of 50 new jobs. Plant spokeswoman Andrea Hales did not return telephone messages.
