After 71 years, the sun sets on Mercury

Jamie LaReau

Automotive News -- August 2, 2010 - 12:01 am ET

After creating high hopes this year for the revival of the Mercury Tracer name, Ford Motor Co. decided instead on June 2 to ax the 71-year-old Mercury brand by year end.

Production of the four Mercury vehicles -- the Milan sedan, Mariner crossover, Mountaineer SUV and Grand Marquis sedan -- will end in the fourth quarter, Ford leaders say. The 2010 model year will be the last.

Mercury's fate was sealed by several factors, including a U.S. market share of less than 1 percent, a poorly defined brand image and a stale product line after years of neglect by Ford.

While it may be easy to dismiss Merc over their recent catalog, the marque still created one of the most iconic & enduring shapes of all time.

I'd gladly trade the 49 For an Eliminator Cougar, or a nice 69-70 XR7 Convertible...

Yes...the humpy '49 does nothing for me, but I love the '67-70 Cougars (esp. the '67/68), '66-71 Cyclones, and the big Mercs from around '61-78...

The '56 Montclair 2-door hdtp was one of the prettiest cars ever produced, according to my old eyes anyway...

A buddy of mine had a '53 2-dr sedan- had a lot of fun with that machine.

'bout the last Merc I can stomach would be the '67-68 Cougar, the last full-size the '66s.

I guess the '0x Maurauder is interesting, but I've never looked one over up close.

I actually like the 56 De Soto better....

That kind of detailing will never be seen again. So exquisite.
