Ford, Toyota hailed for diversity

Automotive News -- August 2, 2010 - 12:01 am ET

Ford and Toyota were the only auto companies to make Black Enterprise magazine's 2010 list of the 40 best companies for diversity.

For the first time since the list debuted in 2005, General Motors didn't make the cut. Black Enterprise says GM declined to participate in the survey process this year, so it wasn't under consideration.

In compiling the list, Black Enterprise measures the percentage of African-Americans and members of other minority groups at companies in four categories: employee base, board of directors, senior management and supplier diversity. The last category looks at the percentage of total procurement dollars spent with companies owned by African-Americans and members of other minority groups.

Toyota was cited especially for its strong showing in senior management and supplier diversity.
