HONDA BUILT MORE CARS IN U.S. THAN IN JAPAN FOR Q2

By Mark Kleis

Honda has announced that for the first time in its history, it produced more vehicles in the U.S. than in its domestic market of Japan for an entire quarter.

The final tally put production in the U.S. at 236,819 vehicles between April and June, while its home market only commanded production of 236,559 vehicles – narrowing giving the U.S. production the nod, according to a Detroit News report.

Despite narrowly passing Japanese production during the second quarter, year-to-date production numbers still give Honda’s home market of Japan a reasonable lead. Honda has managed to produce 491,024 vehicles during the first two quarters in 2010, while the Honda’s U.S. operations have only cranked out some 480,913 vehicles. At this time, it is unclear if the trend of greater U.S. production will continue – possibly driving Honda to outpace its domestic production for the entire year – or if the second quarter will prove to be a fluke.

Honda also recently announced its quarterly profits, reporting profit of $3.2 billion – compared to just $81 million during the same period in 2009.
