Spy Shots: 2012 BMW 1-Series Three-Door 'Shooting Brake'

The shooting brake (or Shooting Break, as Mercedes-Benz styles it) is a design concept which, though not widely known or exercised, gets car freaks all hot and bothered--and for good reason. Combining the practicality of a hatchback with the compactness of a coupe and a look all its own, the shooting brake is a unique take on the "best of all worlds." And now it looks like BMW is planning its own, based on the 2012 1-Series.

Some would argue BMW has already done a small, sport shooting brake in the form of the Z3/M Coupe and the Z4 Coupe. Those cars are, by most metrics, shooting brakes. But with the slightly-sloping roof of the Z4 version, it's not quite as useful as a true 'brake would be, and being a Z4, it's not all that affordable, either. That's where the 1-Series comes in.

We have no confirmation that the shooting brake variant of the 1-Series will be coming to the U.S., but at the same time, we don't have any official denials, either. That leaves the door open for hope, though with the 5-door hatchback not being sold here and America's presumptive dislike of hatches in general, we may never see it except from afar.

The 1-Series three-door should get the same powertrain lineup found in the rest of the 1-Series when it does come (to Europe at least) likely meaning a naturally-aspirated 3.0-liter inline six, a twin-scroll, single-turbo inline six, and, for those lucky Euros, a four-cylinder diesel. The twin-turbo inline six found in the 1-Series M Coupe isn't likely to make the translation, though we have to admit: an M Shooting Brake would be incredible.

Whatever comes of the 1-Series three-door hatch/shooting brake, we're just glad it's on the apparent road to production.

For more on the 2012 BMW 1-Series, check out our spy photos of the M coupe and five-door, too.

I don't think that is a shooting brake. I think it's just the NG 1-Series 3-door hatch.

Agreed this is just a 3 door hatch ala Golf/Rabbit or Mazda 3 :smilewide: (that's the grill) The roof droops too much to be very useful & looks quite short in the butt!

did I miss something? I thought that the 1 series was to be FWD

I think the FWD model is going to be the 0 series.

Different name, I think. To me this would be the perfect opportunity to release low cost vehicles resurrecting the Isetta nameplate instead of diluting the BMW brand name too much. But that's just me...

Another thing I'd like to see is Triumph making a comeback; that's another British brand name BMW took from Rover's deade brands portfolio...

Yeah... I'd rather see some other brand between Mini and BMW than deluting BMW further. Triumph used to have small FWD sedans in the '60s-70s. Or bring back Austin or Morris.

Problem there is- triumph, austin or morris have no brand recognition here (tho the mere fact that it's 'foreign' may be enough for cost-effective volume), they need the "BMW" name to push recognition. The 1-series is floundering badly enough as it is.

67impy- you might have been thinking of the company-released stat that 70% of 1-series buyers thought their car was FWD. :P

Volkswagen has been teasing us with the I.D. Buzz for 6-years when they made the announcement back in 2017 that they would bring the I.D. Buzz to market. The standard wheelbase model has been on sale in Europe since May of last year, and today, Volkswagen is officially announcing the long-wheelbase version for sale in the U.S. starting next year. The ID.Buzz will not, as previously reported, be built at VW's Chatanooga plant alongside the ID.4, instead being built in VW's Hanover Germ

The New Chevrolet Colorado gets a New Bison ZR2

The performance off-road mid-size pickup truck war has turned into a hot war in 2023.  Ford has recently released their 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor, and Toyota introduced an all-new 2024 Tacoma with an incredibly capable Tacoma TRD Off Road. Back in 2018, Chevrolet teamed up with American Expedition Vehicles to the 2019 Chevy Colorado Bison ZR2 to the Colorado lineup.  About a year ago, the all-new 2023 Colorado was released, and while there was a ZR2, the Bison was not part of the announcement
