JLR MULLS HYBRID STEEL/ALUMINUM BODIES FOR FUTURE VEHICLES

By Drew Johnson

With a new crop of smaller vehicles on the horizon, Jaguar Land Rover is considering a shift to a mix of steel and aluminum construction to form the upcoming vehicles’ body work. The hybrid construction would allow for low weight at relatively low costs.

Mark White, the man in charge of body structure for Jaguar, recently revealed to a trade magazine that the British automaker was considering a mix of steel and aluminum that would see “steel for the box sections” and lighter aluminum for “floorpans, roof panels, door inners and outers.” The move would allow Jaguar to cut weight while also keeping costs to a minimum.

The first models to use Jaguar’s hybrid construction would likely be the recently green lighted X-Type replacement – which will compete with the BMW 3-Series – and the XE compact roadster. Both models are expected to hit the market in either 2012 or 2013.

Given Tata Motors’ ownership of both Jaguar and Land Rover, the new construction technique is expected to cross over to the Land Rover brand. Land Rover is said to be working on a new Range Rover model to slot above the Evoque, which could be the first to use the hybrid body construction.
