[MORE PHOTOS!] MAZDA DEBUTS KODO LANGUAGE, SHINARI CONCEPT

By Mark Kleis

The “current” design language at Mazda up until just over two months ago was known as Nagare, but after Mazda made it clear that they were done with that theme the automaker’s new team has created a new language known as Kodo.

When Mazda announced the end of Nagare, the automaker said it would hold an internal competition that would culminate in Ikuo Maeda – its newest design chief – choosing a winner that would debut at the Paris Motor Show. It appears that things were running ahead of schedule, as Mazda has already unveiled a new concept, known as the Shinari.

Maeda also told press at the concept’s unveiling that the Shinari will embody the design elements of Mazda’s future vehicles and eventually lead to other design elements as well.

This concept car is a four-door coupe, with the automaker deliberately penned as it hopes to be a player in the same realm as the luxury automakers currently producing several four-door coupes.

“We want to play in the same group as BMW and Audi,” said Derek Jenkins, director of design for Mazda North America. “On fit and finish we want the same level of quality.”

Check back here later this month of Leftlane’s live coverage of the Paris Motor Show.
