Warren mayor lashes out at Obama over GM decision to stay in Detroit

By Megha Satyanarayana

Free Press staff writer

Warren Mayor Jim Fouts sent a scathing letter to President Obama Friday in response to reports saying the White House quashed efforts by General Motors to move from Detroit to the GM Tech Center in Warren in 2009.

Based on a memoir by then auto advisor Steven Rattner, Fouts called the $10 million bailout of GM a “hammer” that forced GM’s hand. He said Detroit, Wayne County and state officials “bribed” GM to stay put with $25 million in tax credits, even as then CEO Fritz Henderson expounded the merits of the move north.

Fouts said he offered GM incentives to move, and questioned whether the automotive giant would have had to make cuts as steep had they been able to consolidate by moving to the tech center.
