The 2011 Bentley Continental GT is just the second generation of the blockbuster coupe that rumbled ashore eight years ago. And frankly, this new one looks a lot like that ancient one, but Bentley would have us believe that this is actually a completely new car. Outside, the bodywork gets all kinds of massaging: prominent front fender lines that roll over the headlights and into the more-upright grille, a more pronounced grille treatment that asserts itself into the lower intake, LED running lamps surrounding the main headlight elements, a double-horseshoe rear-end treatment inspired by the Mulsanne and taillights that curl into the rear fenders. For a start...

More substantively, the 2011 Conti gets a boost in horsepower from its 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine, hitting 567 horsepower and 516 pound-feet. The engine swipes a page from the Continental Supersports playbook and gains flex-fuel capability, accepting any combination of gasoline and E85. To keep you in touch with that power, Bentley's six-speed Quickshift transmission swaps cogs more quickly and does double downshifts. To keep that power in the right place, the rear track is wider, front-to-rear bias of the all-wheel-drive system is now 40/60 front-to-rear, and the coefficient of drag has been reduced to 0.33. 0-60 mph? 4.4 seconds? Top speed? 198 mph.

As of next year, the nominally eco-conscious will be able to get their Continental GT with a 4.0-liter V8. Numbers haven't been released yet, but you can expect it to register high on the horse and torque while getting significantly better gas mileage than its big brother.

Perhaps the best upgrade of all: the interior accoutrements that now boast an eight-inch touchscreen interface, dynamic navigation and Google Maps. Joining that are a sleeker dash, climate-controlled "Cobra" seats sculpted to provide more rear legroom, and leather-lined door pouches with water bottle holders. It's everything the current Continental GT is. Only more. Follow the jump for the press release and have a gander in the gallery of high-res photos below.

Bentley reveals all-new 2012 Continental GT

Christine Tierney / The Detroit News

Volkswagen AG's British carmaker Bentley unveiled the successor today to the elegant Continental GT coupe that revitalized the luxury brand when it was introduced in 2003.

The all-new 2012 Continental GT coupe bears a close resemblance to the outgoing model but features interior and exterior refinements, redesigned headlamps and updated touch-screen navigation and entertainment systems.

Powered by a 6-liter, W12 engine developed by Volkswagen Group engineers, the Continental GT accelerates from zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds.

"It drives like a supercar, but without the usual sacrifices in ride or practicality," said Franz-Josef Paefgen, chairman and chief executive of Bentley. "It is a car that you can enjoy every moment of every day."

A new 8-cylinder engine will be available next year, offering a 40 percent reduction in emissions compared with the W12. Both engines are coupled to an all-wheel drive system designed to provide even better handling.

Initially dubbed the Baby Bentley, the $180,000-plus Continental GT rolled out seven years ago was one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful luxury cars introduced in the past decade.

After essentially reinventing Bentley after its 2003 model year introduction, the automaker’s Continental GT has become something of an icon among high-end super luxury coupes. As such, Bentley chose the ever-popular “evolution over revolution” mantra for the redesigned 2011 Bentley Continental GT – with one twist: A nod to ever-stricter emissions standards.

Late next year, Bentley says that it will begin offering its four-seat coupe with a new 4.0-liter V8 engine, which will chop the current W12 model’s CO2 emissions by a whopping 40 percent. Bentley is sparse on details about the new V8, but it says that the high-output engine will “deliver all the exhilarating power and torque synonymous with the marque.”

For Bentley traditionalists, however, the W12 returns, boasting 6.0 liters, twin turbochargers and a boost to 567 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque. Lighter than the outgoing model thanks to some material changes throughout, the revised W12 sprints to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

It sends power to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission capable of delivering gear-skipping double downshifts for improved response.

The Continental GT’s all-wheel-drive system has also been revised. Sending power to an increased width track, the system now splits 40 percent of the power to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear to reduce understeer. New 20 and 21-inch alloy wheels are available.

Outside, the Continental GT gains new jewelled headlamps with LED running lights, a revised front grille and some tweaking to the outgoing car’s bodylines. The body is heavily revised from before despite a similar appearance.

Inside, the interior was treated to a thorough refresh. New front and rear seats improve comfort, Bentley says, while a more advanced infotainment system utilizes Google Map compatibility for certain North American, Asian and European markets.

The 2011 Continental GT will formally bow later this month at the Paris Motor Show.

Video: 2011 Bentley Continental GT out on the road

by Jeff Glucker (RSS feed) on Sep 8th 2010 at 2:57PM

The all-new 2011 Bentley Continental GT was recently revealed online. Initially we only had pretty pictures to look at, but information comes fast and furious on the world wide web. We have gotten our hands on a video of the luxurious grand tourer doing what it does best.

The video (located just beyond the jump) is a bit low on action but high on design and style. These pictures and videos only serve to whet our appetite for some (heated leather) seat time in the new Continental. The car is set to make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show so be sure to tune in to our coverage of the entire event. We can't give this Bentley our stamp of approval just yet but details such as the 567 horsepower W12, a top speed of 198 miles per hour, climate-controlled seats and an updated (finally!) touchscreen have us leaning towards "huzzah!"
