Suzuki Recalls Equator, Grand Vitara, SX4 For Fire Hazard From Garmin Satnav

A couple of weeks ago, we told you that Garmin had recalled over 1.3 million GPS units due to a problem with the devices' batteries. When mated to Garmin circuit boards, those cells have a tendency to overheat, causing a fire hazard. Now that recall has bled over to Suzuki, which is recalling three models that make use of Garmin's satnav devices.

Suzuki's recall affects the Equator (from model years 2009 and 2010), the Grand Vitara (2010), and the SX4 (2008, 2009, 2010). The recall includes only those vehicles that came equipped with Garmin satnav systems -- specifically the Nuvi 750, 760, or 765. In all, Suzuki says that 20,692 vehicles are affected. From the webpage that Garmin has built to address the recall, it doesn't appear that the overheating has led to any injuries, although some damage to property has occurred.

If you own one of the affected vehicles, there are several places to turn for additional information. Your Suzuki dealer may have the most up-to-date details about fixes (scheduled to begin later this month), but you might also take a look at www.garmin.com/nuvibatterypcbrecall. You can also reach out and touch Garmin at 866-957-1981, Suzuki at 887-697-8985, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 888-327-4236.

Suzuki recalls SX4, Grand Vitara and Equator for overheating Garmin sat-nav units

by Steven J. Ewing (RSS feed) on Sep 8th 2010 at 5:29PM

When Garmin issued a recall on its Nuvi portable navigation system a couple of weeks ago, Japanese automaker Suzuki informed us that it would need to issue a follow-up recall for a few vehicles in its lineup. After all, Suzuki offers dashboard-mounted Garmin GPS units in its Equator, Grand Vitara and SX4 models, and unfortunately, the Nuvi navis supplied to Suzuki are among the ones that need repair.

Approximately 20,692 Suzuki vehicles are affected by this recall – specifically the 2008-2010 SX4, 2010 Grand Vitara and 2009-2010 Equator equipped with Garmin Nuvi 750, 760 and 765 navigation systems. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that the batteries in these nav units can potentially overheat which could result in a fire.

Garmin technicians will replace the existing batteries free of charge and owners will be notified within the next few weeks. The official recall notice from NHTSA is available after the jump.
