Chevy Cruze rolls off assembly line in red, white and blue

General Motors Co. today celebrated the domestic production launch of its much-anticipated 2011 Chevrolet Cruze in Lordstown, Ohio.

GM, which is 61 percent owned by the U.S. government, made a patriotic display out of the event -- producing red, white and blue models of the Cruze, which replaced the Cobalt at the Ohio plant.

In a statement, GM North America President Mark Reuss said, “Of equal importance, we are working to redefine the views on a domestic carmaker building such a car here in the United States.”

The Cruze already has become Chevrolet's top-selling car globally this year before it reaches the U.S. market, with 165,000 sold worldwide. GM executives have said they are confident the sedan will have equal success in the United States when it reaches showrooms in late September.

In fact, Chevrolet already plans to have models of the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla available on dealer lots to give customers a firsthand comparison when test-driving the Cruze.

Chevrolet hopes to provide customers the amenities of a mid-sized car in the form of a fuel-efficient, safe and reliable compact. The Cruze comes in four models: LS, LT/2LT, LTZ and Eco.

All models will offer 10 airbags, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, traction control, antilock brakes, a collapsible pedal system and power rear-door child safety locks. The LS model will be priced at $16,995, including transportation charges. The Eco version is expected to get up to 40 mpg on the highway.

The Lordstown plant expects to begin shipping the Cruze to U.S. dealerships next week.

GM employs about 4,500 workers in Lordstown, according to the company's Web site.

GM launches Cruze at Ohio plant

Red, white and blue parade of compacts

ASSOCIATED PRESS

LORDSTOWN, Ohio -- General Motors launched its Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan at its factory near Youngstown, Ohio, on Wednesday with a parade of red, white and blue models.

Company and state officials are touting the production as a boost to the U.S. and Ohio economies.

The 2011 Cruze goes on sale this month in U.S. showrooms, with a starting price of $16,995.

The car, about the size of a Ford Focus or Honda Civic, replaces the Chevrolet Cobalt and is expected to achieve up to 40 m.p.g. on the highway.

"The rebirth of the American economy starts right here at Lordstown with a world-class, high-volume car built in the heartland of America," GM North America President Mark Reuss told those who attended the launch at the plant that employs about 4,500.

Reuss arrived in a red Cruze with Gov. Ted Strickland, who praised the Youngstown area.

"I learned a long, long time ago that you can never count out the Mahoning Valley. The only thing stronger than Valley steel are Valley people," he said.

Union leaders at the plant said the car shows that Detroit-based GM can take on foreign automakers for the compact car market.

"We will compete with anything, and we will beat them," said UAW Local 1112 President Jim Graham.

GM said the Cruze is Chevrolet's top-selling car worldwide this year, with more than 165,000 sold.

Ohio gives patriotic start to Chevrolet Cruze

05:38 AM

Normally the launch of a new car doesn't get this much hoopla. But this is the Chevrolet Cruze, a car that puts a lot of pressure on General Motors, and it is being built in Lordstown, Ohio, a t a factory that could use a hit product.

"The rebirth of the American economy starts right here at Lordstown with a world-class, high-volume car built in the heartland of America," GM North America President Mark Reuss was quoted as saying by the Associated Press as the first car came down the line.

As part of a parade of red, white and blue Cruzes, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland arrived in a red Cruze and said manufacturing is back in his downtrodden state.

"To every naysayer out there planning to meekly surrender our future, let me say this: Look at this car made in Ohio by Ohioans," he said.

Cruze goes on sale this month in U.S. starting at $16,995. It competes against the best of the Japanese -- Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

Ohio assembly line shows off first Cruze subcompacts

Staff and wire reports

Lordstown, Ohio -- Chevrolet's first Cruze subcompacts -- red, followed by white, then blue -- rolled off the assembly line Wednesday.

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland pressed an inked thumbprint against the roofline of a red Chevrolet Cruze, signifying the car is a world-class vehicle produced in his state.

He and General Motors North America President Mark Reuss drove the red Cruze off the end of the assembly line.

"The rebirth of the American economy starts right here at Lordstown with a world-class, high-volume car built in the heartland of America," Reuss told a crowd estimated by GM at about 2,000. "The Cruze is the finest compact car GM has ever made, period."

About 4,500 people work at the Lordstown plant.

Cruze models, with price tags starting at $16,995 for the base LS and $22,695 for the top-of-the-line LTZ, will begin arriving in Chevrolet showrooms this month.

During a ceremony that followed the drive-off, 17-year-old Courtney Arbutina received an oversize Cruze ignition key made of foam core symbolizing the Cruze her father purchased for her because of the range of standard safety equipment, including 10 air bags.

"I did it because the Cruze is a great car. And, above all, it's a safe car," said her father, Tim Arbutina.

"It offers me peace of mind knowing that my daughter will be driving one of the safest cars on the highway today."

GM says the Cruze will give consumers fuel economy on par with its top rivals, the Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus and Honda Civic. Estimated fuel economy for the base LS model, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, is 36 miles per gallon highway, with manual transmission.

The Cruze, which replaces the Chevy Cobalt, is an important addition to the automaker's offerings. GM believes the compact car segment is poised for major growth, as car buyers seek to downsize to more fuel-efficient vehicles.

GM hopes to match Toyota's and Honda's small car sales, but hasn't publicly revealed its sales goals for the Cruze.

Last year, Toyota and Honda drew about 20 percent of U.S. sales from small cars, compared to 8 percent for GM.

GM officials hope the Cruze's upscale features will pique the interest of buyers who are looking for a smaller car with some luxuries, such as an upgraded interior and quiet ride, and standard features such as power windows and anti-lock brakes.

Its rivals in the small car segment are upping the ante as more buyers look for better fuel economy, analysts say. Ford Motor Co., for example, comes out with its new 2011 Focus next year.

"We will compete with anything, and we will beat them" with the Cruze, said United Auto Workers Local 1112 President Jim Graham.

U.S. 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Production Starts, Deliveries Begin Soon

By Nelson Ireson

Editor

September 8th, 2010

If you've been eagerly awaiting your own 2011 Cruze or are just anxious to see them up close at the dealership, your wait is nearly over. The first Cruze models built in the U.S. rolled off the line today, headed to dealerships all over the country.

The Cruze is built for the U.S. at GM's 4,500-worker Lordstown, Ohio plant. The conservatively styled yet sophisticated and relatively inexpensive sedan is Chevrolet's first real foray into the compact car market in years, following on the largely forgettable effort from the Cobalt.

Tim Allen will be backing the new 2011 Cruze's rollout as part of his gig as the new voice of Chevrolet. You may have already seen the first ads. Chevrolet is pushing hard on the Cruze launch because it is an important vehicle for the company, both here and abroad.

The 2011 Cruze is already Chevrolet's best-selling car model outside the U.S., moving over 165,000 units this year alone, second within the brand only to the Silverado.

Deliveries to the first U.S. customers are expected to start next week. For more on the new compact sedan, check out our 2011 Chevrolet Cruze first drive.
