2012 HONDA CIVIC SI COUPE SPIED FOR THE FIRST TIME!

By Mark Kleis

The most recent spy shots show the new coupe design for the first time ever, with an added twist as well: this is the high-performance Si model! At first glance our spies figured they had just captured the first-ever shots of the standard Civic Coupe model, but upon closer inspection, it became obvious that this was in fact the range-topping, performance-minded Si trim level.

Another key feature is the obvious use of large rear disc brakes, something that was not used on the standard Civic for the outgoing model. The spy shots we have acquired of the latest sedan in testing used wheels that hid the rear brakes, so at this time we can’t confirm whether or not rear disc will be used across the lineup.

When examining the interior shot which revealed the uncovered seats, we noticed unique red striping on the seats along with substantial bolstering and the tell-tale “Si” badging being covered by a piece of black vinyl. This confirms that Honda is intending to continue to the tradition of the Si model, and may possibly include the Si model in the lineup available at launch.

Also revealed in these shots is the front fascia, which seems to borrow heavily from the more pointed design previously used on the now discontinued Acura RSX. Unlike the RSX, however, this coupe seems to have a much larger lower grille opening, possibly for the increased necessity for airflow to the engine.

The overall shape of the car appears to be very much the same as the outgoing model, although the doors have clearly received a new style – just like the four-door variant.

The greenhouse has a Cavalier look to it. Curious to see if Honda can reconcile the design as it flows into the front and rear of the car. I am skeptical of it.

Spy Shots: 2012 Honda Civic Coupe

With the brand new 2012 Ford Focus, 2011 Chevrolet Cruze and 2011 Volkswagen Jetta coming onto the market over the next 12 months, all with fresh styling, new levels of quality and premium features, one of the small car segment's stalwarts, the Honda Civic, will soon be faced with some serious competition. Not surprisingly, the Civic is also due for an update as these latest spy shots reveal.

Entering its ninth generation in the U.S., the new Honda Civic should arrive late next year as a 2012 model in both gasoline only and hybrid forms. And, once again, there will be both Sedan and Coupe variants on offer.

Like previous generations, the Civic Coupe will be closely related to the Sedan. Mechanically they should be nearly identical, and the Civic Coupe will also likely resemble the Civic Sedan in terms of styling, though from the side it should have a completely different profile. With a shorter wheelbase, the Civic Coupe prototype seen here appears to have a slightly more arched roofline and rear styling that's more rakish than that of the Sedan prototype we saw testing earlier.

The car will remain front-wheel drive for cost and packaging reasons, with a four-cylinder the most likely option. Customers will likely be able to choose from a continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a manual transmission.

Not much else is known about the car but there are rumors that a new three-cylinder engine option will join the four-cylinder range. There’s also word that the Hybrid system from the recently revealed CR-Z Hybrid will make it into the new 2012 Honda Civic, though this option will likely be exclusive to the Sedan.
