MINI QUIETLY UNVEILS SCOOTER E CONCEPT AHEAD OF PARIS MOTOR SHOW

By Mark Kleis

Typically when automakers reveal concepts they do so with much fanfare, cameras flashing and executives hitting key talking points while they have the audience’s attention.

Not so with the MINI Scooter E Concept, which MINI just quietly revealed to the world in sketch form for the first time ever only minutes ago. Aside from disclosing the obvious fact that this is a pure electric scooter, MINI only offered the fact that the true world premier is set to take place at the quickly approaching Paris Motor Show.

Stay tuned for more details as Leftlane covers the Pairs Motor Show live.

Mini knows how to appeal to its customer base. Who else drives a Mini Cooper besides sorority girls who can never get a break from getting arrested for a little ol' Dee-Doubleya-Eye?

Daimler-owned Smart has revealed more plans for a plug-in electric scooter that it will debut at the Paris auto show.

Described as a concept with a possible production future, the traditional-looking scooter is being evaluated as a part of plans to significantly broaden the Smart lineup in coming years to broaden its appeal.

Smart released sketches of the new two-wheeler but no technical details.

Insiders say the Smart scooter uses a lithium-ion battery and is capable of traveling up to 60 miles (nearly 97km) on a single charge. The scooter is also rumored to use a specially adapted airbag to provide added protection for the rider in case of an accident.

Automotive News Europe's sister publication AutoWeek first reported the Smart scooter concept in July.

Smart's Paris display will also feature a lightly facelifted version of the ForTwo, the company's sole model until a reborn ForFour is launched in 2012

Smart rival Mini is also planning to reveal its take on plug-in electric scooters in Paris with a trio of retro-styled two-wheelers, each with the same basic design overlaid with three individual trims, including one that resembles the Mini E.

As with the Smart scooter, Mini is not revealing much about its new concept until closer to its public debut on Sept. 30, but the company did say that it uses a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged.
