Hennessey's Armored, Supercharged Ford Raptor SUV

When people talk about Hennessey Performance Engineering they often complain that, while the cars are fast, they're not great at withstanding small arms fire. The solution? A custom VelociRaptor-based armored SUV they're calling the "War Wagon."

Hennessey's already made a nice side business building ridonculous supercharged and twin-turbocharged Raptors dubbed the VelociRaptor. Now Hennessey's getting into the armored car business with a modified Raptor built with a 6-to-8 passenger SUV body and armor-plating.

The idea's to repair a weakness with current modified armored vehicle manufacturing, which essentially takes chubby kids and gives them access to an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet, by creating a new class of vehicle: armored high-performance vehicles.

No, you're not in a Neal Stephenson novel, this is real.

"Adding armor protection to SUV's such as Chevy Suburbans and Cadillac Escalades can easily increase vehicle weights from 6,000 lbs to over 10,000 lbs", said company president John Hennessey. "We are excited to be able to apply our 20 years of high-performance experience to the armor vehicle industry."

Renderings of the Hennessey VelociRaptor APV (Armored Performance Vehicles) show the new Ford F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew with an Expedition-ish rear end designed to accommodate more passengers and cushion them in high performance, desert-crossing safety. Backing up the SUV will be the same supercharged 6.2-liter V8 Hennessey's already getting to produce 575 hp.

It will be built using as many Ford parts as possible, though Hennessey tells us the increased width of the Raptor means a large amount of custom fabrication will be necessary. The first vehicle will be built next summer and is just one of many APV products. They'll also do the GMT900 platform vehicles, Nissans, Jeeps, Land Rovers, Land Cruiser/LX570s.

And if you're not interested in having an armored supercharged Raptor SUV because no one is trying to shoot at you, but want a supercharged Raptor SUV they'll help you out there, too.

Hennessey VelociRaptor APV is the Raptor-based SUV of our dreams

by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Sep 9th 2010 at 1:00PM

Hennessey has just pulled back the sheets on what can only be described as a raging pile of awesome – the VelociRaptor APV. It can seat up to eight, packs a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 good for a galloping 575 horsepower and if its anything like its pickup cousin, can leap small villages in a single bound. Apparently it can also withstand small-arms fire. The company hasn't announced how much one of these things will set you back, but we're guessing it's more than a handful of shiny pennies.

Something tells us that this truck is going to be mighty popular with border patrol agents.

Hennessey will also turn out an eight-passenger, non-armored version if you don't find yourself under a hail of gunfire on your typical commute. We're guessing that without all the weight of armor plating and bullet-resistant glass, the non-tactical version is quite a bit more entertaining to fling through the desert. Hit the jump for the full press release.

HENNESSEY VELOCIRAPTOR ARMORED PERFORMANCE VEHICLE UNLEASHED!

By Mark Kleis

Hennessey, based in Texas, has had no shortage of outrageous vehicles as of late. The 2012 VelociRaptor APV is certainly no exception.

This massive, eight-seater SUV boasts the same off-road capability and suspension found on Ford’s SVT Raptor F-150, but with a twist – or two.

For starters, the VelociRaptor APV is an SUV, not a truck, although it is based on the 2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Supercrew. To make up for the added weight on the vehicle, a supercharger has been added to the already impressive 6.2-liter 411 horsepower V8, bumping output to 575 horsepower.

The VelociRaptor APV is available in many configurations, including a non-armored version for those just seeking outrageous performance without the need to hide from bullets. Seating arrangements will come in six, seven or eight-seat configurations. There will also be several feature options, including satellite TV, high-speed internet connectivity, entertainment systems and mobile office equipment.

“The VelociRaptor APV will showcase the highest level of protection, comfort and performance all in one vehicle,” said John Hennessey.

Although Hennessey didn’t include pricing in its press release, they did encourage you to call in for more information. Something tells us this truck-suv-beast-thing won’t be cheap, so make sure you check your bank account before calling.
