2010 Paris Auto Show Preview: MINI Cooper Design Concept Teased

By Nelson Ireson

September 9th, 2010

If you think the Countryman was hit with a MINI ugly stick, you may not want to see what's under that cover. If you're a bit more open-minded, however, you may be getting a glimpse of the upcoming facelift for the MINI Cooper S and Clubman S.

Billed as a "design concept," the front-end bits visibile through the cover show a more Countryman-themed face, to better incorporate the MINI Cooper hatches and wagons with the new crossover. That's probably the limit of the design revision. Being the Paris show, however, we expect to be surprised.

Interior upgrades may be on tap for the redesign as well, as our spy photographers spotted covers over parts of the dash. Whether that means a new look or upgraded materials is unclear, however.

A preview event the week before the show will be held September 23 at the London Design Festival, with BMW Group design chief Adrian van Hooydonk on hand to explain the concept.

Sidestepping the upcoming Paris Motor Show, MINI has released a teaser image of a new “design concept” set to be unveiled at a London event on September 23rd. The teaser shot appeared on MINI’s UK Facebook page.

Although technically labeled a design concept, the model in question appears to be an updated version of the company’s Cooper/Clubman models. The sheet keeps us from seeing too much, but it looks as though the Cooper/Clubman range is in line for a new face inspired by the Countryman SUV.

To go along with the new exterior, MINI could also be planning for an interior update, but the company’s Facebook page didn’t give away anything on that front.

Following its London debut, look for the MINI design concept to make its first public appearance at the Paris Motor Show.

Mini unveiling new concept on September 23 and you can be in attendance... if you live in the UK

by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Sep 9th 2010 at 5:57PM

Mini is unveiling a new concept on September 23 in London, and you can win exclusive tickets to join select journalists and BMW Group employees at the live unveiling. All you have to do to enter for a chance to win is e-mail facebook at mini dot co dot uk with the subject line 'MINI Design Concept Event' by Monday, September 13. Excited? Ready to enter? Don't get too jazzed up – Mini is only offering this contest to folks who live in the United Kingdom.

It's pretty disappointing that the contest is only available to UK residents (we totally want to go), but we are indeed interested in what lies under the skin-tight body wrap seen here. It appears to be some version of the Mini Countryman, but we can distinctly see the bulge of two door handles on the driver's side, ruling out any chance that this concept will be the rumored coupe version of the Mini crossover. John Cooper Works treatment, perhaps?

If you live on the English Isle and are interested in attending the event, head over to Mini UK's Facebook page for more info.
