Toyota/Tesla RAV4 EV coming to LA Auto Show, Prius PHEV hitting dealerships in Q2 2012

by Steven J. Ewing (RSS feed) on Sep 13th 2010 at 6:01PM

Back in July, Toyota and Tesla announced a joint venture to bring electric vehicles to market, and the first example – the RAV4 EV – is slated to go on sale in 2012. Now, an update from Toyota says the all-electric RAV4 will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November, meaning that an on-sale date in 2012 doesn't seem all that unrealistic.

Speaking of 2012, Toyota also tweeted about its plans to bring the Prius PHEV to market in the second quarter of that year, citing May or June as a specific timeframe. When it launches, Toyota is targeting sales of roughly 20,000-plus units in North America, with the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf as the key competition.

Tesla and Toyota have previously announced the development of a Tesla-powered RAV4 set to arrive in 2012 - confirming an earlier report by Leftlane that suggested the strong possibility of an electric RAV4 coming from the partnership in the near future.

Today, Toyota confirmed via our favorite communications medium, Twitter, that this potentially exciting new vehicle will be making its world debut at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. Given that the RAV4 is currently considered by many to be the most sporty (thanks to the quickest zero-to-60 time in Toyota's lineup) Toyota product, it will be interesting to see if Toyota aims to retain the sporty characteristics of the RAV4, or if the vehicle is developed with extreme economy in mind.

This electric compact SUV is on an extremely ambitious time line, with 2012 as the intended year of sale for the electric RAV4 being powered by a Tesla electric powertrain. Neither Tesla nor Toyota have confirmed the specifications of the vehicle, but earlier reports by Leftlane suggested an impressive 150 mile range as a possibility, albeit with a price tag of $40,000 to go along with it.

In addition to the confirmation of the RAV4, Toyota is also aiming to develop an electric Corolla, but the RAV4 was the best fit for Tesla's battery pack so it got the nod at this time. An electric Lexus RX SUV is also a possibility.
