Leaked: Ford Mustang Boss 302 Production Limited To 8,000 Over 2 Years

By Nelson Ireson

September 13th, 2010

We know most of the key details of the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 from its unveiling at Pebble Beach last month. But until now, we haven't seen Ford's plans for production quantities. The source of the leak? Borders book store, if you can believe it.

A description for a book to be published next year chronicling the return of the Boss 302, entitled Boss Mustang: The Return of the Baddest Mustang of all Time, reveales that, like the original, just 4,000 will be built each year for a two-year run. Of those, 500 each year will be race-spec 302R vehicles, meaning just 7,000 production Boss 302s will be built over the 2012 and 2013 model years.

We can't be sure if the figures are correct, but the historical homage to the original does fit with the Boss revival theme.

If you can't remember the new Boss' specs offhand, fear not: a fine-tuned naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 cranks out 440 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, while a race-duty clutch mates to the six-speed manual gearbox, sending power to the rear wheels through a 3.73 ratio limited slip differential. Side-pipe exhaust, a stiffer and lower supsension, upgraded manually adjustable shocks, and more aggressive electronic stability and traction control systems improve sound, handling, and, for those not quite ready to unleash the full potential of 440 horses, safety.

With the 2011 Mustang GT the legendary 5.0 was revived, and for 2012 the even more legendary Boss 302 Mustang nameplate will be born again.

This time around, Ford has created three flavors of its iconic track-minded Mustang, the Boss 302, the Boss 302R and the Boss 302 Laguna Seca Edition. All three models will be produced just for model years 2012 and 2013, with the all-new Mustang set to take the stage in 2014.

But before you get too excited about the prospect of owning a Boss of your very own, there are some numbers to be aware of. According to an enthusiast book titled: Boss Mustang: the Return of the Baddest Mustang of all Time, which was picked up by MustangsDaily, Ford only intends produce 4,000 Boss Mustangs in total for each model year, with the 302R being limited to just 500 units per model year.

Pricing isn't released yet, but expect dealers to have a tight grip on any Boss Mustang to land on their lots.
