CHRYSLER DEALERS TO OPEN FIAT SHOWROOMS BY FEBRUARY

By Drew Johnson

Chrysler dealers wanting to sell the Fiat 500 subcompact will have to have a dedicated Fiat showroom up and running by February 2011, Chrysler revealed today. Chrysler – now 20 percent owned by Italy’s Fiat – is expected to begin initial sales of the 500 later this year.

Chrysler dealers still have about a week left to submit their Fiat franchise plans, with the Italian automaker expected to announce 165 franchise winners by October. Although Chrysler/Fiat is pushing the February deadline, Chrysler dealers will be given some leeway in the construction process.

“We’d like it up as soon as possible so they can get their Fiat franchise and start selling the vehicle,” March, Ralph Kisiel, a Chrysler spokesman, said. He added that some of those 165 Fiat dealers will be allowed to open later. “The key here is you don’t open something if they’re not ready,” Kisiel said.

Chrysler has yet to announce U.S. pricing for the Fiat 500, but the automaker revealed to dealers gross margins would be up to $1,500 on every vehicle sold.
