TOYOTA OUTLINES PLUG-IN PRIUS; ON ROAD IN '12

By Andrew Ganz

Toyota says that six new hybrids are on the way within the next six years - including a plug-in variant of the Prius that the automaker says will be the cheapest of its kind.

The plug-in Prius, Toyota product development chief Takeshi Uchiyamada said, will be priced ""so close to the current version that customers really have to hesitate and think about it."

A plug-in Prius would be capable of driving for a certain set range on exclusively electric power before a gasoline engine would kick in. It's unclear if the plug-in Prius' gasoline engine would work as a generator like that in its primary rival, the Chevrolet Volt, or if it would operate like the current Prius.

Toyota says that its Volt rival will be on sale in June of 2012 at a price around $28,000. That's about $13,000 less than the Volt, which goes on sale later this year. But the Volt has a 40 mile electric range before the gas engine kicks in, while the Prius will only be able to use its battery for exclusive power for 13 miles. Nissan's all-electric Leaf, by contrast, has a 100 mile range but has no gasoline back-up motor.

Toyota anticipates selling around 20,000 plug-in Priuses annually.
