New Photos Of 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

By Nelson Ireson

September 15th, 2010

Three weeks ago Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 2012 CLS-Class ahead of its public debut at the 2010 Paris Auto Show, and today, we have a fresh new gallery of photos that show the car off in a much better light. Literally, the lighting is way better.

Rather than the spotlight-in-a-cave shots loosed in August, we get images of the 2012 CLS cruising sunlit highways and parked in multi-million-dollar driveways. They not only show off the new curves and character lines in a more readily understood real-world setting, but also give us a better idea of the light and space in the cabin.

With a more SLS-like nose, more defined rear haunches, and the same swooping this-ain't-a-four-door profile, the overall effect is good. The side of the car is a bit busy to our eye, but given Mercedes' penchant for attention to detail, it's likely to strike the right note with the CLS' core buyers.

What do you think? Is the 2012 model an upgrade on the original, or would you rather look for a clean example of the last generation?

Mercedes-Benz Drops More Photos of 2012 CLS Sports Sedan

Mercedes is trying to make the most of the media's thirst for news slowly unleashing more and photos of its second-generation CLS sports saloon, which will make its grand premiere at the upcoming Paris Auto Show on September 30.

Albeit more visually complex than its predecessor, the new CLS continues the same design theme (on the outside) set by the original model, which was introduced onto the market in 2004.

We'll probably have to wait until the Paris show for detailed specs, but buyers should expect the engine lineup to include among other powerplants, a 3.5 liter V6 petrol producing 306HP and a 4.7-liter bi-turbocharged V8 petrol with 429HP, as well as a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 making at least 536-ponies for the range-topping AMG version that has yet to be revealed.

The new CLS will hit U.S. Mercedes showrooms by mid-year next year.

A wonderful car, full of qualities and EXCELLENT engineering, but... Isn't that sculpting on the sides and the overall design a little too 'busy'?

Mercedes CLS updated for 2012; it started the rush to 'four-door coupe' styling

02:40 PM

The Mercedes-Benz CLS, the high-dollar four-door with the sleek roofline of a coupe, gets a makeover for the 2012 model year. The 2010 CLS will make its public debut at the Paris auto show in October, Mercedes-Benz says.

A coupe is, by definition, a two-door car. But rules and definitions haven't bothered the auto industry in the past, so these days we have four-door coupes -- sedans with more graceful styling, basically.

The cost of such swoop and sweep is headroom. The current, 2011 CLS has 2 to 4 inches less than most other midsize cars.

M-B says the new front is meant to remind you of the SLS AMG, a road-bound rocket. LED headlights and taillights should look snappy, as M-B joins the chase to match the high-class, entertaining look that Audi pioneered with fancy headlight bulbs.

Most automakers would be self-conscious using such lurid descriptions, but not M-B, which says, "The flared wheel arches resemble the powerful thighs of a feline predator waiting to pounce."

M-B doesn't say when the new CLS will go on sale, or what the price will be. The current version of CLS starts at about $75,000 and comes with a 5.5-liter V-8 rated 382 horsepower.
