Audi A1 to be sold out of Europe, but not in U.S.

Audi has reversed course and decided to sell its A1 subcompact hatchback outside of Europe, but not in North America or China.

The second generation of the rotund little car may make it to the U.S., but that won't be for years, and that car will probably have grown larger than the 13-foot A1.

The A1 just went on sale in Europe. Exports to other parts of the world will begin next year. The car competes with little upscale models like the Mercedes-Benz A-class and Mini Cooper.

The front-wheel drive A1 is the only Audi that doesn't offer the brand's trademark Quattro all-wheel drive.

Audi has been surprised by demand for the car. It originally planned to build about 100,000 A1s annually, but has already cranked that up to 120,000. A1 prices start at 15,800 euros ($20,330) in Germany.
