VW CEO CONFIDENT OF REACHING U.S. SALES GOALS

By Drew Johnson

Despite an overall sluggish economy, new Volkswagen CEO Jonathan Browning says the company is still on track to balloon its United States sales to 800,000 units by 2018.

Although one of the loftiest sales goals set in recent history, Browning is confident that VW’s new focus on the U.S. market will ensure the German automaker hits its mark. "This is a dynamic competitive marketplace," said Browning. "If you offer the right product, and the right value, you'll see progress in the marketplace."

VW is banking on its redesigned compact Jetta and upcoming mid-size sedan and New Beetle models to help bolster U.S. sales. VW recently finished construction on a $1 billion plant in Tennessee -- the company’s only production facility in the U.S. – which will begin production of a Camry-fighting sedan in 2011.

Despite Browning’s confidence, VW’s sales gola might be a case of easier said than done. VW sold just 213,500 vehicles in the United States last year, and has delivered 239,000 cars so far this year – well off the pace needed to reach the 800,000 unit mark. VW reached a sales peak of nearly 580,000 vehicles in 1970.
