Following the promotion of Ford's Moray Callum as the automaker's new executive director of design for The Americas, Ford has now located a new designer to fill Callum's former role.

After a relatively short stint with Mercedes-Benz, Piaskowski will now join the ranks of Ford at the age of 41, according to The Detroit News.

Joel Piaskowski's 20+ year career history

Joel Piaskowski first began his career in the automotive world with General Motors, more specifically designing for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Opel, Vauxhaul, Holden and Buick. Piaskowski's focus at GM was on interior and exterior design for production vehicles, as well as development of concept vehicle design and brand character.

After leaving GM, Piaskowski joined Hyundai as the director of the North American Design Studio in 2003 and went on to create several major concepts, the exterior of the Veracruz and Elantra, as well as both the interior and exterior design of Hyundai's Santa Fe. Most recently at Hyundai, Piaskowski penned the design for both the Genesis Coupe and Sedan.

Following a successful stint at Hyundai in Irvine, Piaskowski made the swap Mercedes-Benz design studio in Irvine, as the head of advanced design. Piaskowski's time with Mercedes-Benz would be limited, however, lasting from late 2008 through March of 2010

Ford taps former MB, Hyundai designer Piaskowski as head of exterior design for Americas

Automotive News -- September 20, 2010 - 4:13 pm ET

Ford Motor Co. has hired former Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz designer Joel Piaskowski to head all exterior design for Ford in the Americas.

The assignment includes all Ford brand and Lincoln models, Ford Motor spokesman Alan Hall said today.

The position has been open since Moray Callum was promoted to become executive director of design for Ford in May 2009, Hall said.

Piaskowski, 41, left Mercedes-Benz in March after becoming the head of the automaker's advanced design center in California in January 2009. Prior to joining Mercedes-Benz, Piaskowski headed the design team for Hyundai Motor America, where he was known for the design of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Genesis sedan. The Genesis sedan was named 2009 North American Car of the Year.

A 1990 graduate of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Piaskowski began his career at General Motors, where he worked for 13 years on interior and exterior designs for Pontiac, Chevrolet, Buick and Opel.

Piaskowski will begin his position at Ford on Oct. 1.

Former Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz designer Joel Piaskowski joins Ford Motor Co. on Oct. 1 as head of exterior design for Ford in the Americas.

Piaskowski's move from Mercedes-Benz was confirmed by a Ford spokeswoman on Monday.

Piaskowski, 41, designed many of Hyundai's recent concept cars and is credited with designing the Hyundai Genesis coupe and sedan.

Piaskowski joined Hyundai after spending 13 years at General Motors. He left Hyundai, where he was chief designer, at the end of 2008 to join Mercedes-Benz. He worked as head of design for the automaker's advanced design studio in Irvine, Calif. He left that job in March.

"Keeping your eyes open as you walk through life is very important because you never know what is going to inspire you," Piaskowski said about his approach to design in an interview with Automotive News in 2005.

Piaskowski is a graduate of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

Ex-Hyundai and Benz stylist Piaskowski joins Ford as head of exterior design

by Steven J. Ewing (RSS feed) on Sep 21st 2010 at 2:00PM

According to AutoWeek, Joel Piaskowski, formerly of General Motors, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz, is now making his way to Ford to head the exterior design team for the automaker in the Americas.

Piaskowski is perhaps best known for penning the Hyundai Genesis coupe and sedan – two vehicles that helped change the Korean automaker's image here in the United States. He then left Hyundai at the end of 2008 to become the head of design at Mercedes-Benz's advanced design studio in Irvine, California. Following his departure in March of this year, Piaskowski officially joins Ford Motor Company on October 1.

With recent debuts like the Fiesta as well as the upcoming Focus, Ford is proving that it's capable of creating great design. Adding Piaskowski to the mix of clever-eyed design team should only strengthen Ford's future portfolio, and we're eager to see what new designs come out of the Blue Oval under the journeyman's leadership.
