Perhaps foreshadowing a forthcoming special edition model, our spy photographers have spotted Chevrolet’s upcoming fire-breathing Camaro Z28 sporting Indianapolis 500 livery. The Z28 has previously been seen wearing racecar-like numbers.

In May, Leftlane reported that Chevrolet would be bringing an updated and improved interior for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, but we also reported that the Z28 was definitely approved to go into production featuring a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 - the same engine from the Cadillac CTS-V, meaning output will likely be at least 556 horsepower.

Some of the front-end camouflage has been removed from this Z28, giving us a clear look at the grille and the new lower fascia. We also have a unobstructed look at the exceptionally long chin spoiler. This prototype is sporting the production hood and there is no doubt an aggressive-looking scoop is hiding under that big bump in the camo. We're not sure if those silver hood-pins are production or just a quick fix for the prototype.

With the remaining camo pulled over the front tightly, a new set of inlets on either end of the bumper can also be seen. We've been told the Z28 front end will be quite close to the Transformers Camaro GM showed at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show.

From the profile, we can see a pretty serious looking wheel/tire/brake package. A set of 20-inch wheels, wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 tires appear to be the order of the day for the Z28. The brakes appear to be the same ones we find on the Cadillac CTS-V.

At the rear we can see a monster set of dual pipes on either side. The exhaust note coming from the Z28 was described by our shooter as "nothing short of unholy!" There are also subtle changes to the rocker panels as well as the lower-rear fascia. While our photos don't show it, we also noticed a few pieces of body-colored tape across the trunk lid on this prototype. We believe the tape was covering the fastener points for a rear spoiler.

Watch for the 2012 Camaro Z28 to go on sale in Q1 or Q2 of 2011.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Gives Us Some Lip

The 2012 Chevy Camaro Z28's lost some of its S&M-like front end camouflage, exposing the grille and a very aggressive lower lip. How menacing. [Camaro5]
