NISSAN LOOKING TO DOUBLE CHINA PRODUCTION CAPACITY

By Drew Johnson

Looking to take advantage of the ever-growing Chinese market, Nissan says it will nearly double its China production capacity by 2012. Nissan is currently building its second Chinese factory in Zhengzhou.

When the Zhengzhou plant is fully up and running, Nissan says it will have the capacity to build 1.2 million vehicles in China per year. To coincide with that capacity increase, Nissan plans to increase its Chinese market share from 6 percent to 10 percent by 2012.

“China is now the second-largest economy in the world, and our ambitions and actions are aligned with the current reality,” Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said.

He added: “We are systematically increasing our capacity in order to make sure we are not only keeping our market share but also trying to grow our market share.”

The Chinese auto market got off to a hot start this year, but sales have cooled in recent months due to the end of government subsidies. Still, China remains the world’s largest auto market with sales up by double digits this year.
