Spy Shots: 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG

Last year saw the introduction of a facelifted version of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class SUV but a brand new 2012 model is just around the corner, prototypes of which have already been spied outside the automaker’s research facility in Germany. This new generation will also spawn a high-performance AMG variant, which has also been spied testing, previously as a test mule in the U.S. and now as a prototype back in Germany.

Telltale signs that this is a high-performance AMG model are the sporty wheels and uprated brake rotors.

Engineers are likely testing the air flow and cooling affects of a new bumper design, as well as AMG’s latest twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 engine. The new V-8 engine produces more power and torque than AMG’s current 6.2-liter naturally aspirated mill, with output peaking at 544 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. An available Performance Pack, however, will see output increase even further to 571 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque thanks to additional boost pressure from the turbos.

Look out for the debut of the new 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, including the GL63 AMG model, late next year. Also in the works is a new ML63 model from AMG, which you can see spy shots of by clicking here.
