Breaking: Infiniti Sketches New Pure Electric Model and Confirms 2013 Launch

We just got our hands on the first official teaser sketch of Infiniti's forthcoming dedicated electric vehicle. The image was shown by Infiniti's Senior Vice President, Andy Palmer, during a special ceremony held to mark the opening of the Infiniti Centre Piccadilly in London. Along with the release of the teaser, the Japanese automaker confirmed that the EV will be launched into the market in 2013.

For now, all we know about the as-of-yet unnamed car is that it's powered by electricity and can seat five passengers. The sketchy picture doesn't allows us to make out the body style of the car as it could be a four door sedan, a five-door hatchback/liftback or even a coupe; we're just not sure.

"Befitting the brand’s promise of “Inspired Performance” , the Infiniti EV will be a stylish, compact, high performance, five-seat luxury car with zero emissions technology," the company said in a statement.

There's a strong possibility Infiniti may lift the covers off the EV in Paris, but this has not yet been confirmed. In any case, we'll keep you updated on any new information we receive.

Infiniti's luxury electric vehicle gets official sketch

by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Sep 27th 2010 at 9:20AM

Infiniti has electric plans of its own to show off, and you can kind of make them out in the windswept rendering above. An electric vehicle from Nissan's luxury arm will arrive in 2013, and be "a stylish, high performance five-seat luxury vehicle with zero emissions technology." Of course, what so many would really like is to have that car be a five-seat electric Essence with "Inspired Performance," but you can quit your dreaming.

Your appetizer for the eventual electric vehicle will be the M35 hybrid, which you'll be able to feast on at the LA Auto Show in November. There's a press release with more info after the jump and a gallery of photos below. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

– Infiniti's "Eco Performance" Strategy Also Includes Upcoming Infiniti M Hybrid Sedan –

Infiniti today released a sketch of its first luxury electric vehicle, which is set to launch in the United States and other global markets in 2013. Befitting the brand's promise of "Inspired Performance," the Infiniti EV will be a stylish, high performance five-seat luxury vehicle with zero emissions technology.

"This future EV will play a major part of Infiniti's 'eco performance' strategy that will see a greater focus on hybrid and EV technology," said Infiniti Vice President Ben Poore. "We are committed to applying the world's best technologies to reduce emissions without sacrificing driving excitement or engagement – a pledge that will become more evident soon with the upcoming introduction of our new Infiniti M Hybrid."

The 2012 Infiniti M35h, which features Infiniti's Direct Response Hybrid technology, makes its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The M Hybrid is based on the popular Infiniti M sedan and promises V8 performance with 4-cylinder fuel economy from a 302-horsepower (est.) 3.5-liter V6 supported by a 50 kW (67 horsepower est.) electric motor. Dubbed "the driver's hybrid," the M35h will be able to be driven on electric power alone at speeds up to 50 miles per hour. The compact Lithium-ion battery pack design also allows use of a spacious passenger cabin and ample trunk capacity.

"The new Infiniti M Hybrid changes the rules, achieving excellent fuel economy while delivering the exhilarating driving performance expected of a luxury sports sedan," added Poore.

The Infiniti M35h will be available at Infiniti retailers in the United States in spring 2011.

An Infiniti Leaf, in other words. At least it appears to look better than the Leaf.

I saw two Leaf (Leaves? LOL) yesterday at a display here in Lisbon. It looks much better IRL than in pictures.
