The North American Car and Truck of the Year nominees were named earlier this year--and now, the short list of contenders have been culled from the long list.

The NACOTY organizing committee reports that General Motors and Nissan dominate the car list with three models each. Four European models, four “domestic” models and four from Japan made the cut, as did two from South Korea.

In green-car news, three of the 14 finalists have unconventional powertrains. They include the 2011 Nissan Leaf electric vehicle, the “extended range” electric 2011 Chevrolet Volt and the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

The cars and trucks contending for the 2011 honors are as follows:
