Automotive News Europe -- September 29, 2010 09:00 CET

TROLLHATTAN, Sweden -- Saab Automobile and BMW AG announced an agreement today that will supply engines for Saab's next-generation vehicles.

Under the agreement, BMW will provide Saab four-cylinder 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engines starting in 2012. The engines will be adapted to meet Saab's specific requirements.

The contract was signed here by Saab CEO Jan Ake Jonsson, Saab Chairman Victor Muller and BMW board member for sales and marketing Ian Robertson.

“This is a major step for Saab on our road to becoming a profitable independent premium carmaker,” Muller said in a statement. “In line with our strategy, we will continue to capitalize on our own engineering expertise while also working with the very best partners. Both parties are open to explore further opportunities as part of this relationship in the future.”

Robertson added that the deal is part of BMW's aim to expand its sales of powertrain systems.

“Today's agreement marks another important milestone along this route. We are delighted to support Saab with our engine expertise,” Robertson said in a statement. “Our engines have a clear lead over the competition when it comes to fuel consumption, emissions and performance.”

Officially Official: Saab reaches deal with BMW for 1.6-liter gas turbo engines

by Steven J. Ewing (RSS feed) on Sep 29th 2010 at 9:59AM

Earlier this week, Saab announced that it was in talks with BMW about future component sharing after a report from Bloomberg indicated that the next-generation Saab 9-3 could benefit from BMW power.

Now, Saab has announced that from 2012 on, BMW will supply it with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine which we're told will be adapted to meet Saab's specific requirements. BMW currently uses 1.6-liter turbo fours in its entire Mini range, so we expect that this new mill is the next-generation version of the engine presently found in the Cooper, Clubman and Countryman. As of this writing, no details were released as to what Saab products will use this new engine, and no output specs have been divulged.

Curiously, it would appear that this new turbo engine may only be slated for duty in Saab's new 9-2 small car, contrary to Bloomberg's report. We won't rule out the possibility of the 9-3 getting this 1.6-liter engine, but since the upcoming 9-2 is reportedly being built on Mini Countryman groundwork, having a similar powertrain would indeed make sense. SAAB AUTOMOBILE AND BMW ENTER AGREEMENT FOR SUPPLY OF GASOLINE ENGINES

Zeewolde, The Netherlands, 29 September 2010. Spyker Cars N.V. ("the Group"), a holding company that owns subsidiaries which produce and sell premium automobiles under the Saab and Spyker brands, is listed on Eurolist by NYSE Euronext Amsterdam (ticker symbol SPYKR).

Today, Saab Automobile and BMW announced an agreement for the supply of engines to be used in next-generation Saab vehicles. Under the purchase, supply and development agreement, BMW will supply Saab with 4-cylinder 1.6 liter turbocharged gasoline engines from 2012. The engines will be adapted to meet Saab's specific requirements.

The contract was signed on Wednesday in Trollhättan, Sweden. Participating in the signing were Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile Chairman Victor Muller and Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing.

Announcing the deal, Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson said: "It gives me great pleasure to confirm this exciting new relationship. Curiously, it would appear that this new turbo engine may only be slated for duty in Saab's new 9-2 small car, contrary to Bloomberg's report.

Mini Cooper S is rated at 184hp. Mini JCW is rated at 211hp. The 2.0L turbo currently used by SAAB in the 9-3 has a top rating of 210hp... I think SAAB just found the gasoline engines it needs for its NG 9-3. Maybe the Aero will have a larger engine but the BMW/PSA engine, even in its 3 current variants (150hp, 184hp and 211hp), makes for a very good gasoline lineup. Especially if it comes with BMW's Efficient Dynamics package and if SAAB can save some weight on the NG 9-3 platform.

BMW AGREES TO SUPPLY SAAB WITH TURBOCHARGED ENGINES

By Mark Kleis

The BMW Group has received a major order from Swedish automobile manufacturer Saab to provide engines for an unnamed Saab model, an order BMW says it will officially complete.

Leftlane has been tracking the progress of the alleged deal between Saab and BMW, with the most recent report just two days ago suggesting the two automakers were nearing a deal. According to the contract signed on Wednesday by Ian Robertson, member of the board of management of BMW AG, and the CEO of Saab Automobile, Jan Åke Jonsson, in Trollhättan in Sweden, BMW will start delivery of the engines as of 2012.

The engines in question will be four-cylinder, 1.6-liter turbocharged engines with latest fuel savings technologies is intended for a new Saab model series. These are the same engines currently found in the MINI Cooper S, a BMW product, and produce 181 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque in that application. Saab has not identified which vehicle these engines will be used for, but based on the size and output, this engine makes a strong case for the revival of the Saab 9-2 model.

"It gives me great pleasure to confirm this exciting new relationship. BMW Group’s engines and their fuel savings innovations are widely regarded as a benchmark in the premium segment. We look forward to integrating this technology into our next-generation vehicles in a true Saab way," noted Jonsson.

The engine, which will feature Start-Stop and other measures designed to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, will be assembled at the BMW Group’s Hams Hall engine plant in the UK.

Both companies have agreed not to disclose any financial or contract volume details.

Saab owner Spyker in talks with BMW on supply deal

By TOBY STERLING

ASSOCIATED PRESS

AMSTERDAM — Spyker Cars NV, the Dutch owner of the Saab brand, said Monday it is in talks with BMW AG about the German company potentially supplying it with parts and technology.

In a statement, Spyker says it “confirms that talks are ongoing” with BMW and it would release details once a deal has been reached. BMW declined comment.

Dutch government broadcaster NOS news reported earlier Monday that the two are in talks on a “major deal” and BMW may supply engines for some Saab models.

Spyker has been looking for an engine supplier for the upcoming 9-4X sport-utility vehicle and a more general technology partner for an as-yet unnamed mini line.

The loss-making company sold just 10,000 cars in the first half of 2010, a tiny percentage of the roughly 7.5 million sold in Europe in the same period, and Spyker lacks the resources to develop new lines without help from larger partners.

Meanwhile, BMW has said it is looking to sell and license its technology to other companies as part of its business model. It already supplies French carmaker Peugeot with motors for some smaller car lines.

Tiny Spyker bought Saab out of liquidation earlier this year from General Motors for $74 million in cash. GM also received $326 million in interest-bearing preferred shares in Saab.

Spyker shares surged 38% to euro3.30 in Amsterdam on news of the BMW talks, on hopes a deal will boost Saab’s image and viability. BMW shares were down 0.8% at euro49.96 in Frankfurt.

Spyker lost euro139 million in the first half of 2010 and it had negative net worth of euro126 million ($172 million) as of June 30. It says it has access to euro546 million in funding — enough for about two years of operation at the current rate.

Spyker CEO Victor Muller forecasts selling 80,000 Saabs in 2011 and reaching 120,000 and profitability in 2012, though analysts question whether that is realistic.

Saab plans to launch the 9-4X next year based on a GM Opel chassis, and Muller has said it may also relaunch the defunct 92 line by 2013 as a minicar with an appearance will harken back to the teardrop-shaped look Saab had in the 1950s.

Separately Monday, Saab said it plans a news conference at a major car show in Paris on Sept. 30 at which Muller will present “the latest product and corporate information relating to Saab as an independent car manufacturer.”
