SEOUL, Korea — Hyundai has decided to transform a plant belonging to its affiliate Rotem as a technological research site.

According to the JoonAng Daily, the Rotem plant, located in Ulwang, Gyeoniggi province, which has made high-speed trains, was going to be closed by the manufacturer.

Now Hyundai will use the location for the exclusive development of electronic automobile parts.

Company sources claimed the Ulwang plant was chosen due to its proximity to Hyundai's main offices in Southern Seoul.

What this means to you: Hyundai is known in North America as a budget car manufacturer, but its plans for this new facility should demonstrate that the company is primed to become more of an all-around automotive player.
