CHEVROLET VOLT TO HIT CHINESE MARKET NEXT SUMMER

By Drew Johnson

General Motors has announced it plans to sell a version of its Chevrolet Volt range-extending electric vehicle in China sometime during the second half of 2011. China’s Volts sales could begin as early as July.

Due to initial production constraints and the general lack of electric vehicle infrastructure in China, GM isn’t expecting much volume for the Volt spin-off, but the Michigan automaker views the plug-in as a way to push green technology in the world’s biggest car market.

“The volumes in China won’t be large,” Kevin Wale, president of the U.S. automaker’s China business, said of Volt sales.

Although it remains possible GM could sell the Volt in China under the Chevrolet or Opel banners, several reports have suggested the Chinese version of the Volt with sport a Buick badge. Buick is one of the most popular brands in China, and would see like the perfect fit for such an important car.
