BMW planning rear-wheel drive 2 Series?

BMW planning rear-wheel drive 2 Series?

by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Oct 25th 2010 at 5:23PM

Consider our fingers crossed. With all of the talk of front-wheel-drive BMW models coming down the pike, we simply assumed that the future of small German hatchbacks with roundels on the hood would be littered with soulless heaps. According to the sleuths over at Car and Driver, however, that's not the case. After discovering that BMW had filed for U.S. patents for the names 228, 230 and 235, someone at BMW let it slip that the new 2 Series would, in fact, send its power to the aft. But hold onto your teacups, kids, it gets better.

BMW has also filed for a patent for the M2 moniker.

Now, we know as well as anyone that a patent doth not a production vehicle make, but it's still exciting to know that BMW isn't walking away from the notion of a smallish, fun-to-drive model anytime soon. Supposedly the company is planning a rash of models positioned below the current 1 Series to help decrease its corporate average fuel economy, but the news of a rear-wheel drive model with an M badge on the back goes a long way toward salving any ails inflicted by the thought of a front-wheel-drive Bimmer.

What the hell would the point be? They have the compact 3-Series and the smaller 1Series. Why slot something in between them? It's not like there's a massive size (or price) difference as it is.

BMW 1-Series To Be Rebadged A 2-Series For Next-Gen Model?

2012 BMW 1-Series Convertible renderingEnlarge PhotoBMW has already confirmed that it’s working on a new front-wheel drive model to slot in below its current 1-Series and compete with the likes of the Audi A1 and next-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class. But BMW has a problem on its hands: if it continues its current naming convention the new model would have to be called the 0-Series, something that’s unlikely to occur.

Instead, BMW may rebadge the successor of the current 1-Series a 2-Series, freeing up the 1-Series badge for the new front-wheel drive model. Of course, this is only conjecture but there are some vital clues that strongly suggest such a possibility.

Just this month BMW filed U.S. trademark applications for 228, 230, and 235--the same engine designations as the current 1-Series range. And to add further fuel to the speculation fire, back in June BMW also trademarked the M2 moniker, according to Car and Driver.

The change could come as early as the middle of next year when the current 1-Series Coupe and Convertible are expected to undergo a heavy facelift. Further down the track there could even by hybrid variants of BMW’s future front-wheel drive models as the automaker just this month also announced an agreement with France’s PSA Peugeot Citroen group to develop new hybrid technology for front-wheel drive cars.

Pictured above is a computer-generated rendering of the next-generation BMW 1-Series Convertible, which if the rumors prove true could be called a 2-Series Convertible.

I think it's what the 2nd article 98 posted hints at: RWD becomes the 2-Series, 1-Series will be the FWD car. Can't go lower than 1-Series (0-Series would be laughable as a name) :AH-HA:

I had assumed the FWD models would be the 0-Series or -1-Series.. :)

Not so sure switching the 1-series to RWD is a good idea, after all - 70% buy it because they think it's FWD. :P

There's enough overlap in the current portfolio that there's plenty of room for FWD 1- & 2-series... that'll give them some distinction while bmw works on developing the 4-series, the .75-series and .5-series. They sure aren't working on going upmarket...

BMW PLANNING NEW 2-SERIES NAMEPLATE?

By Drew Johnson

BMW has confirmed that it is readying a small, front-wheel drive model to help curtail the company’s overall emissions, but that plan left just one thing to question – what to call the new model.

As BMW already makes a 1-Series, logic would seem to suggest that the German automaker would have to forgo its traditional naming system (save for the company resorting to the 0-Series moniker) for the new model. However, a new report suggests BMW has a trick up its sleeve to avoid a naming faux pas.

A new version of the current 1-Series is due out in mid-2011, at which time BMW could swap out the 1-Series nameplate for the 2-Series. The switch would give BMW a proper model name for its upcoming small car.

Giving credence to the report are several recent BMW trademarks – 228, 230, 235 and even M2. Those trademarks fall in line with BMW’s current range, hinting that they actually have some production value.

Of course BMW has yet to confirm such a name change is in the works, but we’ll keep out ear to the ground.

BMW is really grasping at straws.

Flood & dilute seems to be the plan.

You pretty much nailed it on this one, dude.

But with all the options it will end up being the BMW 235xic Xdrive GT..... a 4 door coupe wagon sport activity vehicle of course....

As ugly as the Nissan Jute and beloved by the masses.

Could we shoot all of the cars and go back to horses....I'll even clean out the stable...to keep these abortions off of the road.

Ughhh....
