Report: 2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Will Feature Radical Interior

Mercedes-Benz is working on the next-generation of its S-Class flagship sedan, which is expected to be unveiled sometime in 2013, and according to latest reports the car will feature several firsts for the German luxury automaker including a radical new interior design.

The S-Class has traditionally served as a platform for new technologies and the next-generation model is expected to be no different. Not only will there be a host of new safety features, such as PRE-SCAN active suspension, but the car is also expected to feature the automkaer's first plug-in hybrid system, as previewed by last year’s Vision S500 concept car.

But focusing on the cabin, senior interior designer at Mercedes-Benz Hartmut Sinkwitz has revealed to What Car? that the new car will feature a radical change in interior design that's likely to influence the automaker’s future models. Styling will adopt influences from the F800 Style concept car but the biggest change will be a new interface that does away with the rotary knob of the current COMAND system.

“The design is realy looking forward,” Sinkwitz explained. “In most designs there are aspects that you carry over, or must use--there is always some switchgear that you must use for cost reasons, or for brand reasons, but this will be different. It is a clean design.”

According to previous reports, the new S-Class could also feature an advanced human interface concept dubbed SERVO-HMI (Human Machine Interface). Previewed in 2007’s F700 concept car, the interface system features a virtual operating assistant that responds to human speech and can even carry a simple conversation.
