Chinese brands narrow quality gap with foreign automakers

The Changan Benben ranked as China's top compact car in a J.D. Power quality study.

Automotive News China -- November 3, 2010 06:01 CET

SHANGHAI -- When it comes to vehicle quality, domestic Chinese brands are catching up to their global peers, according to the 2010 China Initial Quality Study published by J.D. Power and Associates. The consultancy found that the quality gap between domestic and foreign brands has reached its narrowest margin in the survey's 11-year history.

In 2010, domestic Chinese brands averaged 224 problems per 100 vehicles, down sharply from 258 problems a year earlier. By comparison, foreign brands averaged 135 problems, down from 142 problems in 2009.

The study is based on evaluations by 14,649 owners of new vehicles purchased between October 2009 and June 2010. U.S.-based J.D. Power canvassed buyers of 151 different models in 33 major cities.

The study asked owners to list any problems with new cars after two to six months of ownership. The initial quality score is calculated by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles.

Over the past 10 years, Chinese brands have enjoyed dramatic improvement. This year's gap with foreign brands -- 89 problems per 100 vehicles -- is a huge improvement over 2000, when the domestic brands had 396 more problems per 100 vehicles.

In 2010, domestic models topped quality rankings in three segments: compact, lower premium midsize and minivan. Top performers are listed below:

* Compact: Changan Benben

* Premium compact: Suzuki Swift

* Entry mid-sized: Nissan Tiida

* Mid-sized: Toyota Corolla EX

* Lower premium mid-sized: FAW Besturn B70

* Upper premium mid-sized: Mazda 6

* Luxury: BMW 5 series

* SUV: Toyota RAV4

* Minivan: Hafei Minyi.

  • Chevy Estimated Range for Silverado EV Work Truck Raised to 450 miles

    When Chevrolet initially took the wraps off the Silverado EV last year, GM had estimated up to a 400 mile range based on its own calculations.  As the Silverado EV has made its way through development, it went for EPA certification and came back with 50 miles more than GM's estimate.  With this new EPA certification, the Silverado EV has an over 100-mile advantage over its only on-sale competitor the F-150 Lightning Extended Range (320 miles). The Silverado EV will launch first in WT trim with t

    All New 2024 Toyota Tacoma Yearns For Adventure

    The Toyota Tacoma has been the best-selling mid-size pickup in the U.S. for nearly 20 years. Holding such an important place in the lineup, Toyota has been very conservative with updates in the past.  The outgoing generation ran for a full 7 years, but even that was based on a platform that dates all the way back to 2004.  For 2024, the Tacoma sheds the old platform entirely and joins the Tundra and Sequoia on Toyota's new TNGA-F global truck platform.  The 2024 Tacoma is the latest (and final)

    The Ford Ranger Raptor Finally Comes to the US

    After years of being forbidden fruit offered only in overseas markets, Ford has finally deemed the Ranger Raptor worthy enough to bring to the U.S. The biggest reason for the U.S. not getting the prior version was its standard diesel power and the inability of the platform to take a sizable V6 engine. When Ford redesigned the 2024 Ranger (read more about the 2024 Ford Ranger here), they made sure to alter the engine bay and chassis to accommodate a V6. Powering the Ranger Raptor is a 3.0-li
