Up to 200 Ford workers could lose jobs at Sharonville plant

CINCINNATI -- As many as 200 Ford Motor Co. employees will be laid off in the coming months at a Cincinnati-area transmission plant, a company spokeswoman says.

Ford spokeswoman Anne Marie Gattari said Tuesday that roughly 80 hourly positions at the Sharonville plant will be cut this month, with the others coming later.

Workers at the plant, which employs 1,800, build transmissions for the Ford Crown Victoria sedan, the Lincoln LS and some truck models.

Gattari said Ford is phasing out the Lincoln LS transmission as well as consolidating production of transmissions used in the Crown Victoria and some trucks at its Livonia, Mich., plant.

The Sharonville plant has served as a backup supplier to Livonia.

It was unclear whether the cuts would be temporary or permanent.

Based on a contract between the United Auto Workers union and Ford, laid-off workers are eligible for supplemental unemployment benefits.

In January, Ford announced plans to close 14 plants by 2012, a move that will affect up to 30,000 employees.

Among the plants on the shutdown list is Ford's transmission plant in Batavia, which employs 1,480 hourly and 265 salaried workers. It is scheduled for shutdown in 2008.

Veteran workers at the Batavia plant could transfer to Sharonville, where they would bump out workers with less seniority.
