2011 Porsche Cayman R gets skinny in LA


Porsche has just announced the 2011 Cayman R, previously referred to in the rumormill as the Cayman Clubsport. Think of it as a purer interpretation of the company's baby sports bruiser, much like the Boxster Spyder is to the standard Boxster. With weight saving tricks like aluminum doors, sports bucket seats and unnecessary hardware like the radio, air-conditioning and storage compartments deleted, the Cayman R hits the scales 121 pounds lighter than the run-of-the mill hard top. Porsche engineers also threw in a slight pump in power, throwing the final figure from the 3.4-liter flat lump to 330 horsepower. All told, the changes are good for a 0-60 run in the 4.7-second range – a full .2 seconds quicker than the base Cayman S.

Outside, Porsche has fitted the Cayman S with new 19-inch lightweight wheels, and aesthetic tweaks like a subtle stripe package, contrasting-color mirrors and black-accented headlight bezels. We don't exactly know how much Porsche is going to ask for this gem, but in the grand tradition of offering less content for more money, we don't expect it to be cheap. 2012 Porsche Cayman R: First Look

With fewer pounds, more horsepower and a new model year on its Monroney, the 2012 Porsche Cayman R makes its first public appearance at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The new lightweight version of the mid-engined, Boxster-derived coupe, the Cayman R sports the same 3.4-liter, direct-injected flat six that's tucked into the standard Cayman S. A 10-horsepower boost puts total output at 330 hp, and with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox, the Cayman R is a few ticks quicker than its hardtop siblings.

Porsche claims a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds for the Cayman R with the manual transmission, and 4.4 seconds for the PDK dual-clutch shifter when outfitted with the Sport Chrono package. Top speed numbers reach 175 mph for the manual Cayman R, and 174 mph for the dual-clutch car.

Porsche credits a 121-pound weight loss in the Cayman R to lightweight materials, and some deleted features. The coupe drops its air conditioning and audio system, and gets aluminum door skins, interior door panels from the 911 GT3 RS, and carbon-fiber-backed sport seats.

In their places, Porsche fits a standard limited-slip differential, front and rear aero add-ons and 19-inch wheels also found on the Boxster Spyder roadster--and also gets black body details including a Porsche decal down its flanks.

The Cayman R's suspension is lowered about 0.79 inches for handling, Porsche adds.

The 2012 Cayman R carries a sticker price of $66,300, and pulls into showrooms in February of next year.

The secret is finally out, the mystery model destined for a Los Angeles reveal by Porsche is in fact the Cayman R, which was previously referred to as the Cayman Clubsport.

This exciting new model takes the Cayman S and tacks on an additional 10 horsepower, but drops a noteworthy 121 lbs of weight in search of optimal performance.

This new mid-engine coupé is powered by a tuned-up 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine developing 330 horsepower. In the standard configuration it transmits power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox that propels the car from zero-to-62 mph in 5.0 seconds.

There is also an available seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission that reduces its acceleration time to 4.9 seconds. For even more impressive sprinting performance, the Cayman R can be supplied with one of the optional Sport Chrono packages, taking it to 62 mph in just 4.7 seconds.

Top speed can be reached at 175 mph with manual gearbox, or 174 mph with PDK. Its NEDC fuel consumption is 29.12 mpg imperial with the six-speed gearbox and 9.3 30.37 mpg with PDK.

LA 2010: Porsche pulls the covers off 2011 Cayman R

Porsche has pulled the silk off its all-new 2011 Cayman R, the latest variant of the German automaker's two-seat coupe. Aside from the obligatory decals and badging designed to differentiate this new flagship Cayman from its siblings, the Cayman R boasts a chassis that has been lightened by about 120 pounds and a handful of other tweaks.

Inside the cabin, the Cayman R features Alcantara and leather upholstery, sport seats, strap door handles and a painted console color-keyed to the exterior. Under the skin, the suspension has been enhanced with shorter, more rigid springs and there are customized anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles (the ride height is about 20 millimeters lower than the Cayman S).

Motivation comes from Porsche's 3.4-liter flat-six, bumped up slightly to 330 horsepower, while transmission choices include Porsche's excellent PDK automatic gearbox or a traditional six-speed manual. According to the automaker, the 2,855-pound Cayman R will hit 62 miles per hour in less than five seconds and top out at 175 mph. Porsche Celebrates 60 Years In The US With 3 L.A. Unveilings

Are those birthday candles? Porsche celebrates 60 years in the U.S. with the L.A. Auto Show launch of the Cayman R.

Some folks celebrate their birthdays with candles. The folks at Porsche came up with a better way to mark the maker’s 60th anniversary her in the U.S. – by rolling out three new models at the 2010 L.A. Auto Show.

Sharing the spotlight are the brand new Cayman R, the 911 Carrera GTS, which is making its North American debut, and the 4th-generation 356 Speedster.

The 356 was Porsche’s first – and some would say most revolutionary – production car. It was a lightweight 2-seater with rear-wheel drive and a rear-mounted engine, which was the first to bear the Porsche badge when it arrived in America in 1950.

The first Speedster will always be remembered as the car raced by actor-cum driver James Dean – though he had his fatal accident not in the Speedster but a 550 Spyder.

Of the already limited production run, only 100 copies of the new Speedster 356 will come to the North American market. This means that potential customers have to speed up if they want to buy the exclusive Porsche – which will be offered at $204,000.

The Porsche Speedster is back for the first time in 18 years. The original was Porsche's first offering to reach U.S. shores.

From a global standpoint, the big news at the LA Auto Show was for the world premiere of the 2012 Cayman R. It is not only the most powerful variant of the Cayman but also the lightest, Porsche engineers helping it shed 161 pounds.

The Cayman R is equipped with the 3.4-liter 6-cylinder DFI boxer engine that also powers the Cayman S, but it’s tuned, in the R, to make 10 extra horsepower — 330 instead of 320 hp. The new Porsche model will arrive on the American market early next year and has an MSRP of $66,300 (excluding a $950 destination charge).

Also on stage was the new 911 Carrera GTS. The GTS straddles the 911 range between the S and the GT3, delivering 23 hp more than the 911 Carrera S. The GTS will be available in Coupe and Cabriolet form at $103,100 and $112,900, respectively, (plus $950 destination).

Perhaps we should say there was a fourth preview on the Porsche stand, this one involving the German maker’s new CEO, Matthius Müller. “This is the first time I can address a media crowd outside Europe and, at the same time, introduce a brand new sports car,” he crowded, during the Porsche media event.

Muller previously handled manufacturing duties for Volkswagen, which is in the process of completing its acquisition of the smaller maker.
