GM marketing whiz Joel Ewanick runs into former Hyundai, Nissan bosses

05:51 PM

The auto industry can be a small town. You're sure to run into somebody you know.

Marketing whiz Joel Ewanick, vice president for marketing at General Motors, ran into two previous bosses at an auto-industry discussion panel sponsored by USA TODAY in advance of the Los Angeles auto show.

That's Ewanick in the center, Hyundai's U.S. CEO John Krafcik on the left, Nissan's U.S. chief Carlos Tavares on the right.

We'll give you a full report on what they and the other executives on the panel said, but in the interim, let's just appreciate the moment captured in the photo.

Ewanick worked years at Hyundai in the U.S., helping establish the brand as solid, credible and consumer friendly. He was hired away by Nissan's U.S. operation in March. GM came prowling and, in what had begun to seem like a soap opera or game of musical chairs, snatched Ewanick from Nissan in May.

We imagine it must be like a football team facing its former quarterback. You know his moves, but not when or exactly how he'll make them with his new team. It was a reminder that, although it's the sheetmetal that sells, its the smart, energetic, creative people -- like the three in the picture -- who keep the billion-dollar buggy rolling.
