Report: Shinari Concept Will Influence Next-Gen Mazda6

We know the stunning design of the Mazda Shinari concept will influence the automaker’s future models--we got that confirmation from Mazda’s chief designer, Ikuo Maeda, back in September--but now we have a clue as to when that will first happen.

Unveiled to the public for the first time at last week’s 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Shinari certainly looked good and we can’t to see its influences in Mazda’s future models. How long will that wait be? According to company insiders, around 18 months.

The first car to feature the Shinari’s “Kodo” (Japanese for soul of motion) design theme will be the next-generation Mazda6 due in the spring of 2012. The styling will be toned down but most of the elements will be there. Expect to see the angular grille, sloping roof and coupe-like styling.

The next car will ride on a revised version of the front-wheel drive platform of the current model. However, thanks to the latest SKYACTIV technology, the platform will be lighter and more rigid. New engines and transmissions will also be available, including an advanced diesel engine.
