Volvo Recalls 2011 S60, S80, XC60, XC70 For Software Flaw

Just a few weeks ago, Volvo recalled a number of 2010 and 2011 models for a problem with the driver's side airbags. Now, the Swedish/Chinese automaker is recalling some of those very same vehicles again due to a software flaw that could cause unexpected stalling.

The models affected by this latest recall are the 2011 Volvo S60, S80, XC60, and XC70. (The S80, XC60, and XC70 were also part of October's airbag recall.) According to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem is that "[t]he software calibration for the fuel cut-off functionality in the engine control module (ECM) is too sensitive". As a result, the engines of affected vehicles could stall unnecessarily and suddenly, seriously increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix appears to be a fairly simple software update, which dealers will begin providing on or before next Friday, December 10. If you own one of the affected vehicles, call your dealer, or contact Volvo at 800-458-1552 or customercare@volvoforlife.com. (Be sure to reference recall code #R234.) Alternately, owners can call the NHTSA at 888-327-4236 and ask for information about campaign #10V579000.

Volvo and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration have announced that the Swedish automaker will recall some 6,046 vehicles from the 2011 model year due to a possible flaw in the engine control module. According to NHTSA, a fuel shut-off parameter in the software is too sensitive, and under certain conditions, the engine may stall. Volvo is concerned that the problem may lead to an accident. A total of four models are covered in the recall, including the 2011 S60 and S80 sedans along with the XC60 and XC70 softroaders.

Volvo is scheduled to begin the recall on or before December 10, and owners will have their vehicle's software updated free of charge to fix the problem. Concerned drivers may contact Volvo directly at 1.800.458.1552 or at customercare@volvoforlife.com.
