General Motors Co.'s Oshawa Flex plant in Ontario today started a second shift, adding 700 workers, to handle the coming launch of the Chevrolet Camaro convertible and the new Buick Regal.

This second shift comes a few weeks after the addition of a third shift on the nearby assembly line for the Chevrolet Equinox crossover.

Together, the new shifts have secured 1,300 jobs for Oshawa, prompting the recall of all laid-off production workers and initiating 300 new hires. Production on the Camaro convertible is scheduled to begin in January, with Regal assembly being transferred from Ruesselsheim, Germany, in early spring. The Regal has been shipped from Germany for sale in the U.S. since May of this year. The Ruesselsheim plant will continue to produce the Regal for Europe once U.S. shipments end in the second quarter of 2011.

The coupe version of the Camaro is also built at Oshawa.

GM adds 700 employees at Oshawa plant

Christina Rogers / The Detroit News

General Motors Co.'s Oshawa assembly plant added 700 employees today for a second shift to build the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro convertible and new Buick Regal, the company said.

GM plans to start production on the Camaro convertible and Buick Regal in January. The cars will be made alongside the Chevy Camaro Coupe on the plant's flexible manufacturing line, which allows multiple vehicle models to be built on one assembly line.

The Detroit automaker is also adding a third shift on another line at the Oshawa, Ontario, plant to increase production of the Chevrolet Equinox. The two shifts have saved more than 1,300 jobs at the plant and added more than 300 new employees, GM said.

GM beefs up Canadian plant to make muscle car

700 hired for convertible Camaro, new Regal

ASSOCIATED PRESS

General Motors has added 700 workers to its Oshawa, Ontario, factory near Toronto to make the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro convertible muscle car and the new Buick Regal midsize car, the company said Monday.

Camaro convertible production is to start in January. The plant will start making Regals in early spring.

The additional employees began work Monday on a second shift at one of the factory's two assembly lines, just two months after GM added a third shift on another line to make more Chevrolet Equinox crossover vehicles, one of the company's hottest sellers. The Equinox looks like an SUV but is more fuel efficient and handles better because it's based on car underpinnings.

GM said the 700 jobs, coupled with those added for Equinox production, have secured more than 1,300 jobs at the plant, including the recall of 1,000 laid-off workers and the hiring of 300 employees.

The Equinox and its sister vehicle, the GMC Terrain, are made at a plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, but GM figured out a way to assemble them at Oshawa, as well, to accommodate high demand.

The Buick Regal is now imported from Germany, but Oshawa will begin supplying the U.S. and Canada next year.

The Oshawa plant now makes the Camaro hardtop and the Chevrolet Impala.
