Free Press Business Writer

All those naysayers who think demand for electric vehicles might take a long time to develop probably should keep an eye on the public auction for the first Chevrolet Volt available for sale to the public.

In less than a day, bidders have driven the price for Volt available up to $180,000.

The very first Volt built during regular production will be kept by Chevrolet while the first Volt available for sale to the public is being offered through an auction with all proceeds benefitting math and science education at Detroit Public Schools.

Bidding started at $50,000 earlier today at an event to celebrate production of the extended-range electric car at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant where the Volt is built.

The Volt offered in the auction has a bluish-green exterior, a premium trim package, rear camera and parking assist package, and polished wheels. It also includes a 240-volt charging station and home installation.

General Motors said bids for the first retail Volt will be accepted at www.bidonthevolt.com.

until 6 p.m. on Dec. 14. The winning bid will be announced on Dec. 16.
