Crosstour Is Below Expectations

A year after its introduction, the Honda Accord Crosstour has fallen short of sales expectations, but the automaker isn't ready to label the model a disappointment yet.

The crossover vehicle, the latest derivation of Honda's Accord platform, is assembled in East Liberty, Ohio, and began to roll off of the line Nov. 3 of last year.

Through the end of November this year, the automaker has sold 25,927 Crosstours. That pace means that it likely will not meet Honda's sales goal of 30,000 for the year. And that goal is a revision from the previous sales target of 35,000.

"It's still a work in progress," said Chuck Schifsky, a Honda spokesman. "We're not done yet in terms of building brand awareness."

The Crosstour has faced some big obstacles.

Foremost was the economy, which hurt the entire auto industry and made for a difficult environment for a new product. Also, the model faced harsh criticism of its design from the automotive press. For example, Car and Driver in its January 2010 edition called the Crosstour's styling "bulbous and frumpy."

And while the Crosstour is called a crossover, it doesn't look much like Honda's compact crossover, the CR-V. The Crosstour is more like an oversized station wagon.

Considering the headwinds, Crosstour has done OK, said Ed Kim, director of industry analysis at AutoPacific in Tustin, Calif.

"It's at least a mild success," he said.
