2011 Volvo S60Enlarge PhotoJust a week after the automaker issued a recall on most of its 2011 lineup because of engine stalling issues, Volvo has announced yet another major recall, this time due to faulty seats. The recall affects certain 2009, 2010 and 2011 model year S40, S60 and V50 vehicles, as well as some 2010 and 2011 model year XC60 crossovers.

The affected vehicles are those equipped with power front passenger seats. Apparently, the seat rail’s detection system was manufactured incorrectly and may permit the passenger to move the seat forward beyond recommended levels. With the seat positioned this far forward there is increased risk of injury to the seat’s occupant in the event of a crash.

For no charge dealers will inspect the front passenger seat rails for an “end stop” and make any adjustments if necessary.

In total there are 7,420 vehicles affected and Volvo is yet to issue a customer notification schedule. For more details check out the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website by clicking here.

Volvo recalls four models over potential power seat flaw

by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Dec 7th 2010 at 7:58AM

Volvo is recalling a number of models due to faulty seat rails that may allow the passenger to slide the seat too far forward. According to the Swedish automaker, the mechanism was manufactured wrong, and if the passenger is seated too close to the dash, an injury may occur during an accident. According to the National Highway Transportation Administration, Volvo dealers will inspect the seat rails and fix the issue as necessary free of charge. As of right now, the company hasn't said when exactly the recall will begin.

The fault affects 2009-2011 S40, S60, V50 and XC60 models, and NHTSA says that around 7,420 units could be impacted by the problem.

This is the second recall from Volvo in under a month. The first involved a bad ECU parameter that could cause vehicles to stall. Hit the jump for a look at the most recent recall notice.

VOLVO RECALLS FOUR MODELS FOR POWER SEAT ISSUE

By Andrew Ganz

Suddenly becoming no stranger to recalls, Volvo announced today that a power front passenger seat manufacturing error is to blame for its latest call back. The automaker is recalling 7,420 vehicles in the United States to address the issue.

The front seat rails weren’t correctly manufactured, Volvo says, and they don’t have the necessary end stops to prevent the seat from moving too far forward. As such, Volvo feels that the passenger could sit too far forward and too close to the dashboard and the airbag.

The recall affects some 2009 through 2011 S40, S60 and V50 models, as well as some 2010 through 2011 XC60s.

Volvo says it will begin contacting owners soon to have them schedule an appointment with their local dealer to have end stops installed on affected vehicles. Just last week, Volvo recalled more than 6,000 vehicles over a fuel delivery concern and around 10,000 models were recalled about six weeks ago over an airbag issue.

Volvos Issues Recall on S40, V50, S60 and XC60 Models Over Power Seat Problems

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 07, 2010

Volvo-XC60-0.jpg

A defective front passenger seat power system on certain Volvo models has prompted a recall of 7,420 cars from the Swedish automaker. Federal officials said that the front seat rail's detection system was manufactured incorrectly and may permit the passenger to forward the seat beyond the intended maximum, putting them at risk of injury in a crash.

The models affected from the recall are the 2009-2011MY S40 sedan, V50 station wagon and S60 sedan, plus the 2010-2011MY XC60 crossover. Volvo said the company's dealers will inspect the front passenger side seat rails for the presence of an "end stop" and repair the vehicles as necessary free of charge.

The Swedish automaker has not yet provided a date for the scheduled recall, but owners can contact the company for more information at 1-800-458-1552.
