The 2011 Geneva Motor Show is still a few months out but already the first trickle of product launches are starting to be either previewed or revealed. The latest is a brand new minicar from Kia called the Picanto.

Designed as a rival for the equally small Toyota iQ, the new Picanto will go on sale in Europe in the second half of next year and may even reach the U.S. shortly after as a means for Kia to help reach CAFE regulations.

These official sketches reveal a design very similar to the one on the Toyota iQ but with enough unique elements to make it stand out on its own. Included are several spy shots of a near-production prototype, revealing a fairly conventional hatchback design with what appears to be a four-seater layout.

The new model has been styled by Kia’s European design team based in Frankfurt, Germany, under the direction of design boss, Peter Schreyer.

Expect a range of downsized four-cylinder engines, both gasoline and turbodiesel, and possibly even a three-cylinder unit.

Stay tuned for more details as we approach the 2012 Kia Picanto’s unveiling at the Geneva event in March.

BOLOGNA, Italy – Kia has revealed design sketches and a full-sized styling mock up that hints at the look of its next-generation Picanto.

The so-called “!” design study, which Kia unveiled last week at the Bologna auto show, reveals a more sculptured and dynamic version of the automaker's strong-selling minicar.

Kia also released design sketches of the next Picanto on Tuesday. The Picanto's fresh look aims to make the car stand out in the crowded minicar segment and "is designed to break the city car mould," Kia said.

The 3200mm long, 1600mm wide glossy silver design study, which does not have windows or headlamps, was styled by Kia’s European design team based in Frankfurt, Germany, under the direction of Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer.

Schreyer, 57, who is best known for penning the original Audi TT coupe, spent more than 20 years with Volkswagen and Audi before joining Kia in 2006.

Kia said the production version of the Picanto will debut in March at the Geneva auto show and will go on sale shortly afterward.

Kia teases 2012 Picanto ahead of Geneva debut

Kia has been hard at work, gaining credibility and sales in seemingly all market sectors over the past couple of years. What was once derided as a cut-rate brand has come back with higher quality and attractive styling, but the Picanto has until now been largely left out of the fun. An update for the overseas subcompact came in 2007, but that didn't do much for the diminutive city car. What Kia has in store for the next-generation model, however, stands to improve its lot.

With a debut scheduled for the Geneva Motor Show this coming March, Kia has released two sketches of what we might expect from the new Picanto. And if the new model carries over the edgy styling from these sketches with reasonable accuracy, the Picanto could emerge as a real player in the city car market. Check 'em out in the gallery below, along with the brief press release after the jump.
