Spy Shots: Are you the 2012 Volkswagen NMS?

For all of secrecy surrounding the New Midsized Sedan, we may have just scored our first unfettered glimpse at the new Volkswagen four-door. The quick-eyed crew over at JokeForBlog managed to lay their hands on a scant few images of what appears to be the NMS, and the vehicle looks to take more than a few cues from the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. Using the German carmaker's revised corporate face up front and the same hexagonal license plate inset on the trunk deck, the similarities are almost overwhelming. We've got to wonder exactly what VW has planned to differentiate the two models other than size.

Unfortunately, if these shots are accurate, the as-yet unnamed sedan doesn't appear to be nearly as aggressive as the renderings we saw at this year's Paris Motor Show. While those drawings showed off a low-slung four-door with aggressive lines and plenty of menace in its bones, these spy photos show a vehicle that looks downright pedestrian and conservative. That said, given the modest wheels this model is wearing, we suspect it's a lower trim level – hopefully more expensive models will appear more premium and aggressive.

With the current Passat headed for the scrap heap in America, it would appear that we'd best get used to what we see above. Odds are this machine is going to be a bigger, less-expensive replacement for long-serving VW four-door.

Didn't VW just state they wanted to be a mega-volume brand in the near future? Yes they did.

As such- the utter genericity seen above is no surprise. Get used to bland mediocrity from here on out.

Seriously! It's like the manufacturer takes the existing car, loads it into Irfanview Picture Editor, increases the size of the picture 25%.... viola! next bigger car class!

VW is going to have a hard time taking the number one spot globally when they can't even beat out 4-model Subaru with all 10 VW models (Golf, GTI, Jetta, Passat, CC, Routan, Tiguan, Tourague, Eos, and Beatle.... I forget any?) in the US.

Interesting...Subaru outsells VW in the US? Didn't know that.

 Granted, but just look how similar the C-pillars are. It's big an bland like an Impala. The Jetta's C-pillar is at least trying to ape BMW. I guess I just didn't see it in teh Jetta, but I do loud and clear with this blandmobile.

China Market 2012 Volkswagen NMS Unwrapped?

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 08, 2010

Passat-NMS-1.jpg

Chances are you've already seen a set of pictures, supposedly depicting the U.S. market version of the 2012 Volkswagen New Midsized Sedan (NMS), floating around on the web-o-sphere this week. As always, we looked around and tried to find the original or one of the original sources of the photos. Turns out that these pictures originated from a Chinese car site called Autohome. If we are to believe the report, what you see here is the China-market version of the NMS. Even so, we would like to note that we're not entirely convinced of their authenticity as the photographs could very well be fabricated.

Either way, it won't be long before we find out what the North American market spec NMS looks like as Volkswagen recently confirmed that the car will get its world premiere at next month's Detroit Motor Show, with U.S. sales to begin in the third quarter of 2011.
