Four years ago Volkswagen came up with the V-Dub Rocks promotion, giving away a free guitar with nearly every new 2007 model. So it came with the slightest sense of deja vu when VW announced a partnership with Fender. This time, however, a guitar isn't part of the package, and instead, VW will be offering select 2012 models with an all-new Fender Premium Audio System, featuring nine speakers equipped with proprietary Panasonic tech, dual voice coil speakers and extended range tweeters. The first model to get the new system is the hotted-up 2012 Jetta GLI, followed by the all-new mid-size sedan and soon-to-be unveiled 2012 Beetle. Hit the jump for all the details.

Volkswagen and Fender Put the Concert in the Car

Announce Exclusive Partnership to bring Premium Audio System to Select 2012 Volkswagen Models

Herndon, VA – Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today it has joined forces with Fender Musical Instruments Corp. to bring the raw emotion of a live music performance to the driving experience. The company's partnership with Fender will equip select 2012 models with the all-new Fender Premium Audio System.

"The best seat in the house is now behind the wheel of a Volkswagen," said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. "Our two iconic companies - one with a passion for driving, one with a passion for music - are joining forces to bring the raw emotion of live music to the driving experience."

"By partnering with Volkswagen on the Fender Premium Audio System, we are creating a unique partnership with a truly innovative company allowing us to deliver a product that is as unique, expressive and dynamic as the customers who use it," said Mark Van Vleet, Senior Vice President, Business Affairs for Fender.

The new Jetta GLI will be the first Volkswagen model in dealerships this spring featuring the all-new Fender Premium Audio System, developed exclusively for the Volkswagen brand. It will be available in all other Jettas later, and will be available in the new 2012 midsize sedan and 2012 Beetle in the fall. Now drivers can have Volkswagen's superior German engineering matched with the highest quality sound.

The Fender Premium Audio System in Volkswagen was born of collaboration between two brands known for precision in engineering and passion for innovation. To develop the best possible audio system for Volkswagen, Fender formed a partnership with Panasonic that combined Fender's 64 years of expertise in sound and sound amplification with Panasonic's 68 years of experience with mobile audio systems.

The Fender Premium Audio System in 2012 Volkswagen models is embedded in the vehicle design. Three years of research, development and tuning in a new, state-of-the-art sound lab, resulted in a nine-speaker system that delivers uncompromised clarity, regardless of volume, with a unique sound that Americans will love.

The system features proprietary Panasonic speaker technology. The system covers the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers that generate imaging beyond the capabilities of traditional speaker designs. It cuts through the noise and other distractions with front dual voice coil speakers, with extended range for all musical genres.

The design features lower inter-modulation distortion and smooth mid-range response to eliminate harshness. It is harmonically complex, with extended range tweeters and properly voiced 16cm speakers revealing original instrumentation timbre and harmonic richness.

Speaking at the International Motor Press Association meeting in New York, Browning was joined in making the announcement by Van Vleet and Allen Kudla, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Panasonic.

2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI First To Get Fender Car Audio System

volkswagen_100316773_s.jpg

2011 Volkswagen JettaEnlarge PhotoMention the name Fender with respect to music and sound, and you'll likely think of electric guitars, loud amps, and the likes of Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughn—or even John Lennon. Fender's Stratocaster has become one of the biggest names in guitars.

Now, the Fender name is playing a part in the transformation of car audio. Now Volkswagen has partnered with Fender, as well as Panasonic, for premium audio systems that will debut in several Volkswagens for the 2012 model year. The Fender system will first be available in the 2012 Jetta GLI, then it will be offered in the company's upcoming (and yet unnamed) mid-size sedan, and later in the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle.

Premium car audio is not only something that makes a car more appealing, as automakers have found; it's something that shoppers are willing to pay extra for, so at a time when bottom lines are feeling the pinch it's a potential profit margin as well as a positive.

The Fender system will rely on the company's experience with amplification while featuring a proprietary Panasonic speaker system.

Volkswagen claims that the new system will offer "a unique sound that Americans will love." With nine speakers, including front dual voice coil speakers in front, as well as extended-range tweeters, the system claims to provide smooth mid-range response and a less harsh, distorted sound than rival systems.

Name-dropping certainly isn't anything new with respect to car audio. Old captive audio systems have been on the way out for a long time, replaced by audiophile options from makers such as Bowers and Wilkins, Bang & Olufsen, Bose, Mark Levinson, ELS, Lexicon, Harman Kardon, Infinity, and Sony, among many others. VW had previously offered Monsoon premium audio on some models, including the Jetta.

VOLKSWAGEN, FENDER TEAM UP FOR PREMIUM AUDIO SYSTEM

By Andrew Ganz

Volkswagen and Fender Musical Instruments – best known for rockin’ guitars – have partnered together for a new premium audio system that will debut in select VW products for the 2012 model year.

Developed by Panasonic but not finished until Fender had its hand in the deal, the new audio systems will be initially launched this spring in the upcoming Volkswagen Jetta GLI. The system will then be available in the as-of-yet unnamed Volkswagen midsize sedan (which will replace the Passat and will debut soon) and the Volkswagen Beetle and the rest of the Jetta lineup.

VW says that the audio system has been acoustically matched to each vehicle’s cabin with proprietary Panasonic speaker technology.

Look for more information about the upgraded audio system to become available closer to the Jetta GLI’s launch the spring.

This sounds like a promising system, despite the hokey Fender tie-in.

I'd like to see GM perhaps pursue one or two manufacturers, instead of Bose, a brand which seems to sell more on brand than quality. Even the Boston Acoustics system in the Camaro is pretty weak-sauce.

Perhaps a tie-in with Monster and Dr. Dre for some 'Beats' systems in Chevrolet's, like the Sonic and Camaro to get the attention of younger shoppers.

2011 Volkswagen JettaEnlarge PhotoVolkswagen has announced that it has joined forces with a legend in the audio industry, Fender, with which it plans to launch a premium audio system for select 2012 models.

The first model to be equipped with the Fender audio system will be the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta in GLI trim, and will be available this spring. Other models within the Volkswagen lineup, including the upcoming ‘New Mid-size Sedan’ and next-generation New Beetle, will offer the Fender audio system in the fall.

To develop the audio system for Volkswagen, Fender formed a partnership with Panasonic that combined Fender’s 64 years of expertise in sound and sound amplification with Panasonic’s 68 years of experience with mobile audio systems.

There has been more than three years of research, development and tuning in a new, state-of-the-art sound lab, and this has resulted in a nine-speaker system that delivers high-level clarity, regardless of volume.

The system also features proprietary Panasonic speaker technology, which is able to cover the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers that generate imaging beyond the capabilities of traditional speaker designs. It cuts through the noise and other distractions with front dual voice coil speakers, with extended range for all musical genres.
